Unmatched: Little Red Riding Hood vs. Beowulf

This asymmetrical miniature fighting game pits unique heroes against each other using distinct card decks. Little Red Riding Hood chains card combinations by matching icons, while Beowulf builds rage for powerful attacks. Players engage in tactical movement and skill-based combat with no luck involved. Victory comes from mastering each hero's abilities and outsmarting opponents.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Choose a battlefield

Place the game board on the table

Select your hero

Each player chooses a hero and takes the corresponding 30 action cards, character card, hero miniature, sidekick token, health dials, and any other components for their hero

Set starting health

Each player sets their hero's starting health and their sidekick's starting health on the matching health dials as shown on the character cards

Prepare your deck

Each player shuffles their action cards to form a single deck and places it face down

Draw starting hand

Each player draws 5 cards as their starting hand

Place younger player's fighters

The younger player places their hero in the 1 space on the battlefield, then places their sidekick in a separate space within the same zone as their hero

Place older player's fighters

The older player places their hero in the 2 space on the battlefield, then places their sidekick in the same zone as their hero

Set door tokens aside

Place the door tokens to the side (doors start open)

Determine first player

The younger player takes the first turn

Set Beowulf's starting Rage

Beowulf begins the game with 1 Rage token

Place Little Red's Basket card

Place Little Red's Basket in your discard pile at the start of the game

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Take two actions

You must take 2 actions on your turn; you cannot skip an action and may choose two different actions or the same action twice

Action Option: Maneuver

Draw the top card of your deck, then you may move your fighters

Action Option: Scheme

Choose a scheme card from your hand and play it face up

Action Option: Attack

Declare which of your fighters is performing the attack

Hand limit enforcement

At the end of your turn, discard down to 7 cards if you have more

Drawing when exhausted

When your deck is empty and you need to draw, each of your fighters takes 2 damage instead

Opening and closing doors

During a maneuver action, a fighter may close an adjacent door for free, or spend 1 space of movement to open an adjacent door

Little Red's Basket mechanic

The top card of Little Red's discard pile is her basket; effects using basket items only resolve if that item symbol is on the top card

Beowulf's Rage mechanic

When Beowulf takes damage from any source, he gains 1 Rage (maximum 3); spend Rage for card effects as indicated

Winning

How to claim victory.

Defeat the opposing hero

You win when your opponent's hero is reduced to zero health

Immediate game end

The game ends immediately when a hero is defeated

Sidekick defeat

When a sidekick is reduced to zero health, remove their token from the battlefield but the game continues

Hero defeat means loss

If your hero is defeated, you immediately lose the game

Team play victory

In team games, both opposing heroes must be defeated to win
