In Vinhos, players assume roles as Portuguese winemakers competing over six harvests. Expand vineyards across regions, hire skilled enologists, and craft quality wines. Generate income by selling locally while building international reputation through exports. Strategic timing matters when entering wine fairs to showcase your finest bottles for prestige and awards, ultimately determining the superior vintner.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place the game board

Put the board in the center of the table

Choose player colors

Each player selects one color (yellow, red, purple, or blue) and takes their components

Gather player components

Each player receives 8 barrels, 9 discs, 1 action marker, 3 exhibition tiles, and 1 player board in their color

Set up victory points track

Each player places one disc on the "0" space of the victory points track

Prepare harvest tiles

Set aside the "0" harvest tile, shuffle remaining tiles face-down on the board, then place the "0" tile face-up on top

Determine player order

Randomly determine turn order and each player places a turn order disc on the upper row of the turn order area

Place wine tiles

Set all wine tiles as a general supply beside the board

Distribute starting money

First player receives 11,000 Bagos, second player 11,000 (12,000 in 2-player), third and fourth players 12,000 each

Set up wine exhibition

Place one characteristic marker on the leftmost space of each row; each player places one disc on the exhibition points track symbol

Set up Banco do Vinho

Each player places one disc on number 5 of the bank account and one disc on the +1 space of the investments track

Place enologists

Put all enologist figures on the board

Position action markers

Each player places their action marker on the center space of the action area

Place round marker

Put the round/tax marker on the upper-left space of the round counter

Set up wine experts

Sort expert tiles by characteristic (taste, smell, appearance, alcohol), shuffle each stack, place face-up on corresponding spaces

Place wine cellars

Place cellar tiles on board (9 for 4 players, 7 for 3 players, 5 for 2 players)

Place wineries

Place winery tiles on board (16 for 4 players, 12 for 3 players, 8 for 2 players)

Prepare vineyard tiles

Sort by region number, shuffle each stack, place cost-side up on corresponding region spaces; place Port wine tiles on Douro region

Adjust for player count

Use 8 regions for 4 players, 7 for 3 players, 6 for 2 players; remove unused region tiles

Place regional reputation cubes

Put reputation cubes on the board

Buy starting vineyard

Each player selects a region, takes top vineyard tile, pays cost in cash, places tile region-side up on player board, places disc on region space, places reputation cube in region, and takes a value-2 wine tile

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Perform two actions per year

Each round consists of two phases where each player performs one action per phase

Move action marker

Move your marker to any space; adjacent moves (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) are free, non-adjacent moves cost 1,000 Bagos

Pay other players

If moving to a space with other players' markers, pay each 1,000 Bagos in cash

Pay tax marker

If moving to a space with the round/tax marker, pay 1,000 Bagos to general supply

Exception for Pass/Press Release

Moving to Pass/Press Release space is always free regardless of other markers present

Execute the action

After moving, perform the action of your destination space

Buy vineyards action

Purchase 1 or more vineyards from different regions; take top tile, pay cost, place region-side up on empty estate space, place disc on region field, add reputation cube

Build wineries action

Build 1 or 2 wineries for 3,000 Bagos each; place on empty estate space, add reputation cube

Hire enologists action

Hire 1 or 2 enologists for 1,000 Bagos each; place on empty winery

Build wine cellar action

Build 1 cellar for 2,000 Bagos; place over warehouse, transfer existing wines maintaining age position, add reputation cube

Sell wine action

Sell 1 or more wines to local customers (Casa de Fados, Hotel, Enoteca)

Export wine action

Export 1 or more wines to foreign markets

Bank action

Perform any combination: withdraw cash (move account back), deposit cash (move account forward), invest (move investment marker up, pay from account)

Disinvest anytime

Move investment marker down one space to receive cash from general supply

Hire wine experts action

Hire 1 or 2 experts for 1,000 Bagos each; take top tile from chosen stack, place face-up

Pass/Press Release action

Move turn order disc to lower row; either pass or announce exhibition wine

Retrieve barrels from local customers

Before any action or exhibition step, return 2 barrels from ONE customer to place 2 reputation cubes in different regions

Use manager benefits

During action step, discard 1 wine to move 1 barrel within manager row to bonus action field or multiplier field

Wine production

At end of each year, shift existing wines one space right (discard if no space), then produce new wine for each estate with vineyard

Wine value calculation

When selling, exporting, or exhibiting: production value + aging bonus (1/3/5 from cellar position) + optional reputation cubes (1-2 points)

Maintenance step

Receive or pay interest based on investment position; pay 1,000 from account per enologist or dismiss unpayable ones

Winning

How to claim victory.

Play six complete rounds

The game ends after the third exhibition at the end of year 6

Final barrel movements

After third exhibition, players in turn order may discard wines to move barrels to bonus actions or multipliers until all pass

Score export majorities

For each foreign market column, player with most barrels receives VP shown above column; ties split points rounded down

Score bank account

Receive VP shown at left side of account row where marker rests

Score multipliers

Receive VP from any multiplier positions occupied by your barrels

Determine winner

Player with most victory points wins

Break ties

Most barrels in export area wins; if still tied, most total money (account plus cash, may disinvest first) wins
