Samurai

2-4 players 30-60 min 7.5 Board Game Geek Rating

In medieval Japan, players deploy hexagonal tiles to influence three factions: samurai, peasants, and priests represented by scattered tokens. Tiles grant faction-specific or universal influence, allowing quick strikes or methodical approaches. When tokens become surrounded, the most influential player claims them. Victory requires achieving majorities across the three faction types when endgame triggers.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1
Build the game board based on the number of players (2, 3, or 4 players use different board configurations)
2
Place 3 leader tokens near the board arranged in a circle (used for end-game scoring)
3
Prepare resources based on player count
4
Each player selects a color and takes 20 tiles and a player screen of that color
5
Each player secretly selects 5 tiles to form their starting hand, placed behind their screen
6
Each player shuffles their remaining 15 tiles face-down to form a draw pile
7
Place one Buddha, one rice, and one helmet piece on the Edo space
8
Starting with the youngest player and going clockwise, players take turns placing one tribe piece on city spaces (max 2 pieces per city, no duplicates of same type)
9
Continue placing pieces on village spaces (max 1 piece per village) until all spaces are populated

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Play a tile
Select one tile from your hand and place it on an empty land or sea space (not residential spaces)
2
Check for capture
If all land spaces surrounding a residential space are filled with tiles, capture occurs
3
Refill hand
Draw tiles from your pile until you have 5 tiles (or as many as available)
4
Speed tiles
You may play one regular tile plus any number of speed tiles (marked with red symbol) per turn
5
Swap tile
Reveals from behind screen to swap positions of any two tribe pieces on the board
6
Move tile
Relocate one of your previously placed tiles (without speed symbol) to a new empty land space; the move tile takes the original space
