Furnace

2-4 players 30-60 min 7.4 Board Game Geek Rating

In Furnace, players are 19th-century industrialists building corporations through auction and production phases. During auctions, place numbered discs on company cards—highest bidder wins the card while lower bidders receive compensation. Then activate your acquired companies to produce resources, process materials, and upgrade facilities. After four rounds, the player with the most money wins this engine-building competition.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1
Select first player randomly
Bots can be the first player; shuffle all player disks in a bag and draw one randomly to determine who goes first
2
Give first player token
Award the first player token to whoever was selected
3
Prepare AI card decks
Shuffle each bot's AI cards and place them face down in a deck
4
Place capital disks
Put a set of capital disks next to each bot's card deck along with the player token in the matching color
5
Set up auction row
Regardless of player count, solo mode uses six company cards to form the auction row

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Draw AI card for bot
On the bot's turn, draw one AI card and place it face up; the number inside the circle indicates which disk number (matching the bot's color) to use
2
Roll six-sided die
The die result shows which card position (from left to right) the bot will place its disk on
3
Follow placement rules
The bot follows the same placement rules as human players for positioning disks
4
Adjust placement if needed
If the bot cannot place on the indicated card, try the next card to the right until a valid position is found
5
Wrap around if necessary
If the bot cannot place on the sixth card, return to card one
6
Arrange AI cards in order
Place drawn AI cards face up in a row from left to right in the order they were drawn
7
Award cards to winning bots
When a bot wins a company card in auction, remove that card from the game
8
Pay compensation to losing bots
If a bot has a disk with a number lower than the winner, give it compensation as resources
9
Receive resources as compensation
Bots receive resources as rewards; place them on or around the bot's player token to create a stockpile
10
Convert resources using conversion table
If a bot needs to convert resources to other resources, only do so if the conversion follows the bot's conversion table
11
Skip intermediate conversions
If a company card requires intermediate upgrades in the conversion table and the bot has the necessary resources, it may skip intermediate steps
12
Award money for impossible conversions
If a process cannot advance in the conversion diagram or the bot cannot convert a resource to an upgrade token, give the bot money equal to its capital disk number
13
Use AI cards and stored resources
The bot's production phase uses only its AI cards and accumulated resources
14
Process cards left to right
Following the order cards were drawn during auction, resolve each card from left to right as shown in the diagram
15
Receive card bonus
The bot receives the bonus from the leftmost card (shown with dotted border)
16
Check processing action symbol
Look at the second card's processing action symbol; the small arrow pointing left indicates the resource type from the first card
17
Convert resources per conversion table
The bot converts each specified resource in its stockpile according to its conversion table (e.g., each coal converts to $2)
18
Receive fallback bonus if unable to convert
If the bot cannot convert any specified resources, it receives the current card's bonus instead
19
Continue through all four cards
Process AI cards in this manner through the fourth card
20
Chain resources between cards
Any resource the bot gains from one AI card can be used in the next card to the right
21
Complete production phase
Once all players finish production, the round ends
22
Count final scores
If at the end of round four, perform final scoring
23
Pass first player token
Otherwise, pass the first player token clockwise to the next player
24
Shuffle AI cards
Shuffle all bot AI cards and place them face down in a deck
25
Advance round marker
Move the round marker forward and begin a new round

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Discard unused bot resources
Any resources held by a bot at the end of round four that were not processed are worthless
2
Calculate total wealth
Each player adds their own money plus all bot money together
3
Determine winner by highest total
The player with the most money wins the game
4
All players lose on tie
If there is a tie for first place, all players lose (suggestion: ruthless capitalism demands rivals be destroyed, not equaled)
