Players assume Viking roles in this strategic board game, raiding territories and collecting resources through worker placement mechanics. Choose from 61 actions across four columns requiring increasing Viking workers. Cover negative-point squares in your hall with valuable tiles while meeting feast requirements each round. Victory goes to the player accumulating the most points.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place the action board
Put the action board in the center of the table where all players can reach it

Prepare goods organizers
Open both organizers and place them near the action board for easy access to all goods tokens

Set up ships and special tiles
Place the ship board and oval special tiles board next to the organizers

Prepare mountain tiles
Shuffle 8 mountain tiles, reveal 2 face up (3 in a 4-player game), stack remainder face down

Set up building tiles
Create three separate stacks for sheds, stone houses, and long houses

Prepare island boards
Arrange the 4 double-sided island boards (Shetland, Faroe, Iceland, Greenland) in order with their A-side face up

Prepare round board
Place the round board and put the round marker on Phase 1 "New Viking"

Sort profession cards
Separate cards by back color into light-brown (starting) and dark-brown (profession) decks
9
Shuffle weapon cards
Mix remaining bows, snares, spears, and long swords; place face down as weapon deck

Distribute starting items
Each player receives:

Distribute player boards
Each player takes a home board

Distribute Vikings
Each player takes 12 Vikings of one color

Add extra tiles for 4 players
Randomly place 2 additional action tiles on the action board (not used with 1-3 players)

Determine first player
Randomly select starting player and give them the elk first-player token

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Phase 1 - New Viking
Take the leftmost Viking from your banquet table and add to your thing square

Phase 2 - Harvest
Receive orange goods tokens based on current round number shown under the banquet table space
3
Phase 3 - Flip islands and place silver
Flip designated unclaimed island boards to B-side; place 2 silver on each remaining unclaimed island (not the one being flipped)
4
Phase 4 - Draw weapon
Each player draws 1 weapon card and places it face up in their supply

Phase 5 - Actions
Starting with first player, clockwise, players place Vikings on action spaces

Phase 6 - Determine first player
Player who placed Vikings last becomes new first player

Phase 7 - Collect income
Receive silver equal to lowest visible number on your home board's income diagonal
8
Phase 8 - Breed animals
Pregnant sheep/cows give birth; if 2+ non-pregnant animals exist, make one pregnant
9
Phase 9 - Feast
Cover all empty banquet table spaces with orange/red food tokens or silver coins
10
Phase 10 - Bonus
Receive goods tokens shown on your board where all 8 surrounding spaces are covered

Phase 11 - Mountain strip update
Remove leftmost resource from each revealed mountain; discard empty mountains; reveal new mountain tile

Phase 12 - Return Vikings
Move all Vikings from action board back to thing square

Production actions (green)
Receive goods as depicted; some require animals or payment

Craft and building actions (light gray)
Exchange resources for buildings, ships, or upgraded goods

Mountain and trade actions (golden-brown)
Take resources from mountain tiles; upgrade goods to more valuable versions

Knarr actions (blue)
Require owning a knarr

Emigration actions (yellow)
Flip a knarr or longship and place on banquet table; costs silver equal to round number

Raiding/Pillaging/Hunting actions (red)
Roll dice up to 3 times

Claim island boards using appropriate ships

Draw profession cards or play them from hand

Place goods on boards
Position green/blue goods, silver, and ore on home board and island boards

Cover spaces on sheds/houses with orange, red, green, blue goods, or silver (not ore)

Purchase ships for silver equal to their point value (whaleboat 3, knarr 5, longship 8)

Exchange silver
Trade silver tokens freely between denominations

Arm ships
Place ore from supply onto whaleboat/longship weapon spaces

Apply blue-background profession effects any time

Three-Viking bonus
When placing 3 Vikings on column 3, draw a profession card before taking action

Four-Viking bonus
When placing 4 Vikings on column 4, may play a profession card before taking action

Winning

How to claim victory.

Game end trigger
The game ends immediately after the Feast phase of the final round (round 7 in long game, round 6 in short game)

Final placement
Before scoring, place remaining goods from supply onto boards and buildings if legally possible
3
Score ships
Whaleboats: 3 points; Knarrs: 5 points; Longships: 8 points
4
Score emigration
Knarrs used for emigration: 18 points; Longships: 21 points
5
Score islands
Each island board scores 4-38 points (value shown in upper right corner)
6
Score buildings
Sheds: 8 points; Stone houses: 10 points; Long houses: 17 points
7
Score animals
Sheep: 2 points (pregnant: 3); Cows: 3 points (pregnant: 4)
8
Score professions
Add points shown in upper right of each played profession card
9
Score silver
Count silver remaining in supply only (silver on boards doesn't count)
10
Score final income
Record your income value instead of receiving silver in the last round
11
Score English Crown
Owner receives 2 bonus points regardless of placement
12
Calculate penalties
Subtract points for uncovered penalty spaces (-1 each) on home board, islands, and buildings
13
Apply thing penalties
Subtract 3 points per thing penalty tile
14
Apply placement errors
If goods were illegally placed adjacent, receive 1 thing penalty per adjacent pair
15
Determine winner
Player with most points wins; ties result in shared victory
16
Solo game benchmark
Scoring 100+ points indicates excellent solo performance
