Players manage dice-based populations in medieval Troyes, France across religious, military, and civil domains. Using cards and dice, you assign workers to build cathedrals, fight disasters, and complete city tasks. You can hire opponents' dice with money. Victory comes through accumulating the most fame points.

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place common supply
Position neutral citizens, dice, deniers, and VP tokens near the game board

Choose player color
Each player selects a color and takes their corresponding components

Place plot marker
Put your plot marker on one of 5 gray disc images on the central square closest to your seat
4
Receive starting money
Take 5 deniers (money is open information throughout the game)

Set influence marker
Place your influence marker on space 4 of the influence track

Take citizens
Receive 4 citizens for 4-player game (5 for 3 players, 6 for 2 players) as your personal supply
7
Draw Character card
Randomly receive 1 Character card kept secret (2 cards in 2-player game)

Take markers
Receive 20 markers in your color

Prepare Activity cards
Separate by color and round number (I, II, III), place one card of each color face-down on corresponding spaces, remove unused cards

Form Event decks
Create 3 Event decks by color; red deck size equals number of rounds (6 for 4 players, 5 for 3, 4 for 2)

Initial citizen placement
Starting with first player, each player places one citizen in Palace, Bishopric, or City Hall on empty spaces
12
Two-player exception
Place neutral citizens on designated spaces before player placement

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Phase 0: Reveal Activity cards
During first three rounds, flip one Activity card of each color matching the round number

Phase 1: Income and wages
Receive 10 deniers, then pay 1 denier per citizen in Bishopric and 2 deniers per citizen in Palace
3
Phase 2: Assemble citizens
Roll dice matching your citizens (yellow for City Hall, white for Bishopric, red for Palace), place on your plot
4
Phase 3: Events
Reveal top red Event card, then reveal white or yellow Event as indicated

Phase 4: Actions
Starting with first player, take one action or pass

Action 1: Activate Activity card
Place workforce on matching color card

Action 2: Build Cathedral
Use 1-3 white dice to place markers matching dice values

Action 3: Combat Events
Use dice matching Event card color to place markers on flags

Action 4: Place citizen in main building
Use exactly one die to place citizen

Action 5: Agriculture
Use 1-3 yellow dice to earn deniers equal to dice sum divided by 2

Action 6: Pass
If dice remain on any plot, receive 2 deniers on your plot

Phase 5: End of round
Collect deniers from plot, return expelled citizens to personal supply, pass first player card left

Before actions, spend influence for:

When last red Event card enters play, complete that round

Score Event markers
Earn 1 VP per unneutralized Event card containing your marker (including Marauding)

Score craftsmen
Gain VP shown on spaces where your craftsmen are placed

Cathedral penalty
Lose 2 VP for each of 3 Cathedral levels without your marker

Reveal Characters
Each Character card rewards all players based on specific criteria:

Two-player thresholds
Add 1 to each Character scoring threshold

Determine winner
Player with most victory points wins
