Raptor

2-2 players 30-30 min 7.2 Board Game Geek Rating

In this tactical card game, scientists hunt an escaped mother raptor and her offspring in a park setting. Players simultaneously reveal numbered cards each round—whoever plays lower executes their card's special action while their opponent gains movement points equal to the card difference. Scientists win by capturing babies or tranquilizing mama; raptors win by escaping.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1
Choose board atmosphere
Select either jungle or savannah side for all ten tiles (must be consistent across all tiles)
2
Arrange square tiles
Place the 6 square tiles randomly forming a 2-by-3 rectangle
3
Place L-shaped tiles
Position the 4 L-shaped tiles randomly along the shortest sides of the rectangle
4
Add rocks
Place 3D rocks on each space that does not show a circle or half-circle
5
Raptor player takes components
Collect the Raptor player aid, 9 Raptor Action cards, mother figurine, and 5 baby raptor figurines
6
Place mother raptor
Position the mother on one of the two central tiles
7
Distribute baby raptors
Place one baby raptor on each of the remaining five tiles
8
Scientist player takes components
Collect the Scientist player aid, 9 Scientist Action cards, 10 scientist figurines, 10 fire tokens, and 5 sleep tokens (placed ammunition-side up on player aid)
9
Place initial scientists
Position one scientist on a space of choice on each of the 4 L-shaped tiles
10
Keep scientist reserve
The remaining 6 scientists are kept in reserve next to the player aid
11
Shuffle decks
Each player shuffles their deck of Action cards and places it face-down
12
Draw starting hand
Each player draws the first three cards from their deck

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Select cards simultaneously
Each player chooses one of their three cards and places it face-down, then both are revealed at the same time
2
Resolve tied values
If both cards show the same value, both are discarded with no effect
3
Apply lower card effect
The player who played the lowest value card applies their card's effect first (effects must be applied if possible)
4
Spend action points
The player with the higher value card receives action points equal to the difference between the two card values
5
Important restriction
The player receiving action points does NOT apply their card's effect
6
Draw new cards
At round end, each player draws one card to return their hand to three cards
7
Track played cards
Place played Action cards visibly in front of each player so opponents can see which values have been used
8
Reshuffle when empty
If a player's draw pile is empty, shuffle the discard pile to create a new draw pile
9
Move a baby raptor
Move one baby onto an empty orthogonally adjacent space; landing on a half-space escape exit removes that baby from the board (counts toward victory)
10
Move the mother
Move the mother any number of spaces in a straight line until hitting an obstacle (rock, fire, raptor, or scientist)
11
Wounded mother penalty
If the mother has sleep tokens, spend that many action points before her first move of the turn
12
Kill a scientist
Remove a scientist on a neighboring space from the game entirely
13
Wake a baby raptor
Set a sleeping baby on a neighboring space back upright (cannot wake a baby put to sleep this turn)
14
Extinguish fire
Remove a fire token on a neighboring space plus all fire tokens orthogonally connected to it
15
Card 1 - Mother's Call and Shuffle
Move one awake baby to the mother's tile without crossing occupied or fire spaces, then shuffle draw and discard piles together
16
Card 2/6 - Disappearance and Observation
Remove mother from board; after scientist's actions, place her on any free space; next turn, scientist must show their chosen card before raptor chooses
17
Card 3 - Fear
Frighten one scientist (lay figurine down); scientist is inactive until set upright
18
Card 4 - Mother's Call (x2)
Move one or two awake babies to the mother's tile without crossing occupied or fire spaces
19
Card 5 - Recovery (x2)
Remove up to two sleep tokens from mother, wake up to two babies, or combine both effects
20
Card 7 - Recovery (x3)
Remove up to three sleep tokens from mother, wake up to three babies, or combine both effects
21
Card 8 - Fear (x2)
Frighten one or two scientists of choice
22
Card 9 - No effect
This card has no special ability
23
Move a scientist
Move onto a free orthogonally adjacent space; may pass through fire but cannot end on it
24
Stand up frightened scientist
Set a frightened scientist back upright (cannot do this the same turn they were frightened)
25
Shoot baby raptor
Put a baby on a neighboring space to sleep (lay figurine down)
26
Capture sleeping baby
Remove a sleeping baby on a neighboring space from the board to the player aid
27
Shoot mother raptor
Fire at the mother in a straight line with clear line of sight; give one sleep token to raptor player
28
One aggressive action limit
Each scientist may only perform ONE aggressive action (shoot or capture) per turn
29
Card 1 - Sleeping Gas and Shuffle
Put one baby to sleep on the same or adjacent tile as any scientist, then shuffle draw and discard piles together
30
Card 2/6 - Reinforcements
Place one or two scientists from reserve on empty spaces along the long edges of the board (square tiles only, not L-shaped tiles)
31
Card 3 - Jeep (x2)
Move one or two scientists in straight lines any distance until hitting obstacles; driving over fire removes those fire tokens
32
Card 4 - Sleeping Gas (x2)
Put one or two baby raptors to sleep on the same or adjacent tiles as scientists
33
Card 5 - Fire (x2)
Place two fire tokens on free spaces orthogonally adjacent to a scientist or existing fire token
34
Card 7 - Fire (x3)
Place three fire tokens on free spaces orthogonally adjacent to a scientist or existing fire token
35
Card 8 - Jeep (x4)
Perform up to four Jeep moves split among any scientists; driving over fire removes those tokens
36
Card 9 - No effect
This card has no special ability
37
No stacking
There can never be two figurines or tokens on the same space
38
Orthogonal movement only
Diagonal adjacency is never used for moving or shooting
39
Exit restrictions
Only baby raptors can move onto half-space exits; no other figurines or tokens may be placed there
40
