How to Play

Qwixx

2-5 players 15-15 min 6.9 Board Game Geek Rating

In Qwixx, players simultaneously mark numbers on colored rows using dice rolls. Six dice are rolled each turn—two white plus four colored dice. All players can mark the white dice sum on any row, while the active player gets an additional colored die option. Numbers must be marked left-to-right in sequence. Score points by completing rows, but penalty boxes cost points. Game ends when penalties accumulate or rows lock.

2
Select the appropriate scorecard
Use the scorecard showing 6 color-rows (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) and optionally the black row
3
Add black die if using variant

4
Note starting penalty
When using the Black Die variant, you start with a 32-point penalty that will be subtracted from your total score if no black boxes are marked

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Roll all dice
The active player rolls all dice in the game
2
Score primary color rows
Mark off numbers in red, blue, or yellow rows by combining that color die with one of the white dice
3
Score secondary color rows
Mark off numbers in orange, green, or purple rows by combining two primary color dice
4
Use active player privilege
On your second action, choose to mark off one number using a white die plus a color die, or two color dice for secondary colors
5
Use black die option
As active player, subtract one white die from the black die to mark off values (5, 4, 3, 2, 1) in the black row from left to right only
6
Handle locked primary rows
When a primary color row is locked, that die remains in the game but can only be used to create secondary colors
7
Mark misthrow boxes
If you cannot or choose not to mark any number, mark a misthrow box and lose 5 points

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Trigger game end with locked rows
Play ends immediately when three color-rows have been locked by any combination of players
2
Trigger game end with misthrows
Play ends immediately if any player marks their 4th misthrow box
3
Score color rows
Count boxes marked in each row and score according to the scoring track (1 box = 1 point, 2 boxes = 3 points, up to 12 boxes = 78 points)
4
Calculate black row penalty
Subtract points based on boxes marked: 0 boxes = subtract 32, 1 box = subtract 16, 2 boxes = subtract 8, 3 boxes = subtract 4, 4 boxes = subtract 2, 5 boxes = subtract 0
5
Subtract misthrow penalties
Lose 5 points for each misthrow box marked
6
Note black row exclusion
The black row does not count as a locked row for end game purposes
7
Determine winner
The player with the highest total score wins
