PARKS

1-5 players 30-60 min 7.6 Board Game Geek Rating

Players control two hikers traversing seasonal trails to gather resource tokens representing natural memories like mountains and forests. These collected resources can be exchanged to visit National Parks. Trail configurations change each season, becoming progressively longer. Strategic resource management and engine-building determine success in this nature-themed adventure.

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Choose Trail Tiles
Use 6 Trail tiles from 1st Edition instead of 2nd Edition oval Trail tiles: 2-Sun, 2-Water, Forest, Mountain, Photo/Canteen, and Trade a Resource for Wildlife

Place Photo/Canteen Overlay
Place Photo/Canteen oval Trail tile on top of 1st Edition Photo/Canteen tile icons

Set Up PARKS/Gear Site
Place 1st Edition PARKS/Gear Trail tile onto 2nd Edition PARKS Trail site, then place Gear oval Trail tile above the icons

Prepare Advanced Trail Tiles for Season 1
Use only the PARKS/Gear tile as the Advanced Trail tile

Prepare Advanced Trail Tiles for Seasons 2-4
Use the PARKS/Gear tile plus 3 randomly selected tiles from the remaining 7 Advanced Trail tiles (3 Base + 4 Wildlife)

Shuffle Remaining Advanced Tiles
Shuffle the 5 remaining 1st Edition Advanced Trail Site tiles and randomly choose 2 of them

Place Advanced Tiles
Position chosen tiles on open Trail sites normally used for the oval Gear tile and Trail Die tile

Mark Trail Die Site
Use the Trail die itself to mark the Trail Die Trail site

Distribute Starting Canteens
Each player starts with one 1st Edition Canteen card

Select Year Cards
Randomly draw 2 cards each from Base and Nightfall decks, then select and keep 1 card from each set, or choose 2 cards from one deck

Choose Passion Cards
Players as a group decide how many of the 10 available Passion cards each player may use

Set Season Bonus
Randomly choose another Fall Season Bonus tile if playing a 4th Season
13
Configure Campfires (1st Edition Rules)
All players start all Seasons with campfires lit, regardless of player count
14
Configure Campfires (2nd Edition Rules)
For 1-3 players start extinguished; for 4+ players start lit

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Move Hiker
Move one of your Hikers forward along the Trail to an available site
2
Perform Site Action
Execute the action shown on the Trail site where your Hiker lands

Use Trail Die Site
If not using 2nd Edition Trail die, roll Trails game die or D6 to determine which tile site to copy
4
Visit PARKS/Gear Site
When visiting, you may perform both PARKS and Gear actions

Activate Canteen Cards
Players may pair sets of 2 Canteen cards side-by-side, activating both with one Water token, or activate a single non-paired Canteen card

Manage Canteen Limit
Players may have 4+ pairs of Canteen cards displayed instead of the normal limit of 3 pairs
7
Take Photos (2nd Edition Rules)
At Photo Trail Sites and Trail End, photos cost only 1 Resource (Wildlife acceptable)

Take Second Photo
Players with Camera or Shutterbug Badge may take a 2nd Photo at Photo sites or Trail End
9
Trail End Photos
All players may take a Photo without the Camera at Trail End
10
Gain Wildlife Bonus
First player to take Photo-taking action at Trail End gains a Wildlife token

Take Photos (Trails Rules)
Draw 2 Photo/Bird cards and keep 1, or take the top discarded Photo
12
Visit Bison's Park
Trade 1 Resource (not Wildlife) for a Wildlife before or after visiting
13
Claim Bison Wildlife
After visiting the Bison's Park, gain the Wildlife and move Bison to next Park to the right
14
Bison Reset
When Bison is visited on rightmost Park, it moves to leftmost Park and you may discard and replace any available Gear card
15
Use Campfire
Extinguish your campfire to share an occupied Trail site with another Hiker
16
Relight Campfire
Campfire relights when one of your Hikers reaches Trail End, not at Season End
17
Reserve Parks
Players may Reserve 1 Park from the Parks Display or top of deck
18
Visit Parks
Players may visit 2 or more Parks from the Parks Display and/or personal Reserve

How to claim victory.

Score Visited Parks
Total the point values on all Parks cards you have visited
2
Score Photos
Count points from all Photos taken during the game
3
Award Photo Bonus (2nd Edition)
All tied 1st place players each receive full 4 points; all tied 2nd place players each receive full 2 points
4
Award Photo Bonus (Trails Rules)
Each Photo is worth its point value, plus 4-point bonus for the player with the most Birds from Photos and Badges
5
Calculate Final Score
Sum Parks points, Photo points, and any bonus points
6
Determine Winner
Player with the highest total score wins the game
