Players invest in four African trading companies by acquiring shares and expanding their networks across the continent. The unique rotating card mechanism requires strategic hand management—cards played each round become temporarily unusable until recovered. Victory goes to whoever accumulates the most money through share values, trading goods, and diamond ventures after seven rounds.

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place the game board
Put the board in the center of the table

Return track cards to box
The 4 track cards (A1, B1, C1, D1) are not needed for the first game

Position company tracks
Place tracks along board edges: A1 near Mombasa (black), B1 near Cape Town (red), C1 near Saint-Louis (white), D1 near Cairo (orange)

Place trading posts
Put 15 trading posts of each color on corresponding company bases: 15 black in Mombasa, 15 red in Cape Town, 15 white in Saint-Louis, 15 orange in Cairo

Sort action cards
Organize 44 action cards by letter (A, B, C, D, E) in upper right corner

Fill the card display
Place 12 cards from the deck onto the card display

Set up coins
Place 1-pound and 5-pound coins in a supply near the board called the "bank"

Prepare round track
Fill spaces 2-7 on round track with coins based on player count

Sort book tiles
Organize 72 book tiles by letter on back (A, B, C), place face-down near upper right of board

Fill book display
Place 12 tiles on book display by revealing 4 tiles from each letter stack, placing face-up matching letter positions

Place bonus tiles
Put 4 bonus tiles face-up to the right of the board

Choose player color
Each player selects a color and takes matching components

Receive player board
Take the board of chosen color, place face-up in front of you (white and black side visible above and below)

Take starting action cards
Receive 9 starting cards of your chosen color

Collect track markers
Take 4 track markers of your color, place one on starting space of each company track

Place diamond marker
Put 1 diamond marker on starting space of diamond track on your player board

Position inkwell marker
Place 1 inkwell marker beside your player board

Take starting money

Determine first player
Randomly select first player, give them the first player marker

Give each player a specific "1"-expansion card

Prepare starting tiles
Shuffle 10 starting tiles, deal 2 face-down to each player

Each player places starting tile face-up on envelope image on their player board

Put your inkwell marker on the inkwell image on your starting tile

Take the 3 cards shown by icons in your starting tile's corner, place face-up above your board on the 3 colored recovery areas (any order)

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Play seven rounds
The game lasts exactly 7 rounds total

Complete three phases per round
Each round consists of Planning Phase, Action Phase, and Preparation Phase

Calculate final scores
After Action Phase of round 7, proceed to final scoring
4
Perform simultaneous planning
All players execute two steps at the same time

Place cards face-down
Choose cards from your hand and place them face-down into available spaces in your action area
6
Manage action area slots
You begin with 3 available action area slots (3 colored areas under your board), each holding maximum 1 card
7
Unlock additional slots
Gain 1 or 2 extra action area slots by reaching certain positions on diamond and bookkeeping tracks
8
Consider recovery areas
Each action area connects to a recovery area above your board; cards move to recovery areas at round end and accumulate there
9
Return one stack per round
You may return only one stack from a recovery area to your hand each round
10
Reveal all cards
After all players finish placing cards, everyone flips their cards face-up simultaneously

Begin with first player
Action Phase starts with the first player's turn
12
Proceed clockwise
Players take turns clockwise from the first player
13
Continue until all pass
Action Phase continues until all players complete the "End your Action Phase" action

Perform exactly one action
On your turn, you must perform one and only one of the following actions:

Select one goods type
Choose cards of one type (coffee, bananas, or cotton) from your action area

Calculate total value
Sum the specific value shown on all selected cards of that type

Purchase cards optionally
Buy maximum 1 card from the card display; price equals sum of red numbers in the card's box plus number to its right
18
Advance on company tracks
Spend remaining value to move your markers forward on one or more company tracks, 1 space per value point
19
Flip used cards
Turn all used goods cards face-down to indicate they were used
20
Use all expansion cards
You must use all expansion cards in your action area simultaneously

Calculate expansion points
Sum expansion points (1, 2, or 3) shown on all expansion cards

Choose one company
Select exactly one company to develop (you cannot split points between companies)

Enter regions
Spend expansion points to place trading posts from company base into map regions

Pay border costs
Spend 1 point to cross single-line borders, 2 points for double-line borders

Pay extra for opponent posts
Spend 1 additional point to enter regions containing other companies' trading posts

Take trading posts
Remove posts from topmost available position in any column of company base

Place posts sideways
Put trading posts on their side in regions to mark them as newly occupied this turn

Collect region rewards
After spending all expansion points, collect rewards from all regions occupied this turn

Return opponent posts
Send all trading posts of other companies in your newly occupied regions back to their bases

Restore posts to lowest slots
Return displaced posts to lowest available positions in their base columns

Turn your posts upright
After returning opponent posts, turn your newly placed trading posts upright

Flip expansion cards
Turn all used expansion cards face-down

Move on bookkeeping track
This action lets you advance your inkwell marker along the bookkeeping track

Understand book requirements
Your inkwell can only move onto books if corresponding book tiles are present; you start with one book from your starting tile

Spend bookkeeping points to acquire book tiles from the book display

Flip books optionally
Before moving inkwell, pay 2 pounds to flip 1 book tile on your board face-down

Advance inkwell marker
Move your inkwell forward along bookkeeping track as many spaces as desired

Check book requirements
Before moving onto each book, verify you meet its requirement (total value of specified card type in your action area)

Collect book rewards
When you stop on a book, collect the reward shown on that book tile

At end of your turn, place any purchased books on your bookkeeping track

Bonuses on tracks A and B are permanent once unlocked (increased expansion power, bonus markers, reduced card costs)

Bonuses on tracks C and D unlock bonus spaces you can use with "Place bonus marker" action

Unlock extra action slot
When diamond marker reaches or passes marked position, gain one additional action area slot under your board

Unlock bookkeeping slot
When inkwell reaches marked position on bookkeeping track, gain one additional action area slot

Receive money at track end
If diamond marker reaches final space, receive 2 pounds per movement instead of advancing

Identify stock cards
The last 8 cards in the action card deck are stock cards

Purchase stock cards normally
These cards may appear in card display and can be purchased like other cards

Each player returns all inactive cards from recovery areas to their hand

Sort cards by company
Find all cards with company stock symbols in lower left corner, organize by company type

Calculate money score
Record total pounds each player has in their supply

Calculate Mombasa company score
Count total visible coin symbols on Mombasa (black) company base

Calculate Cape Town company score
Count visible coin symbols on Cape Town (red) base, multiply by your shares, record result
7
Calculate Saint-Louis company score
Count visible coin symbols on Saint-Louis (white) base, multiply by your shares, record result
8
Calculate Cairo company score
Count visible coin symbols on Cairo (orange) base, multiply by your shares, record result
9
Record diamond track score
Note the last value your diamond marker reached or passed on your diamond track
10
Record bookkeeping track score
Note the last value your inkwell marker reached or passed on the bookkeeping track
11
Sum all categories
Add together: money + all four company scores + diamond track value + bookkeeping track value
12
Determine winner
Player with highest total score wins the game
13
Break ties
In case of tie, players share the victory
