Set between Bilbo's departure and Frodo's quest, Middle-Earth Quest pits one Sauron player against up to three heroes like Gondorian Captains or Westfold Riders. The evil player spreads dark influence across Middle-earth while heroes work to thwart sinister schemes and rally allies to their cause during this growing period of darkness.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Choose sides
One player becomes Sauron while all other players control heroes of the West

Assemble the game board
Unfold both board pieces and connect them according to the illustration, placing Sauron's area within easy reach

Select heroes
Each hero player chooses a hero sheet and takes the matching plastic figure, placing it at the hero's starting location on the board

Place favor and character tokens
Put all favor tokens and character tokens in the designated area on the board

Set up hero card decks
Separate all hero cards by back design into 6 hero decks and 1 skill deck

Draw starting quests
Each hero player randomly selects one of their starting quest cards and places it face up in front of them

Prepare event card decks
Sort event cards by stage number on the back and create three separate shuffled decks placed face down near the board

Sort encounter decks
Separate encounter cards by the jewel color on the back (5 region colors plus white haven encounters) and shuffle each deck separately, placing them face down on the left side of the board

Place story markers
Put all 4 story markers (green for heroes, yellow, black, and red for Sauron) on the starting position of the story track

Sauron places influence tokens
Put all influence tokens in the influence area on the board

Position starting minions
Place the Black Serpent and Mouth of Sauron minion figures at their starting locations marked in the minion area

Draw initial plot card
Sauron randomly selects one of the 3 starting plot cards

Prepare shadow and plot decks
Shuffle shadow cards, corruption cards, peril cards, and advanced plot cards separately, then place them face down in their designated positions on the board

Set up monster reference and combat cards
Place monster reference cards face up in an accessible location, then shuffle the 3 monster combat decks separately and place them face down beside the board

Organize monster tokens
Separate monster tokens by color into 5 piles, arranging each pile randomly face down so Sauron can easily access them

Distribute remaining tokens
Sauron takes all damage tokens, level tokens, Sauron action tokens, and the event marker, keeping them accessible near the board

Draw mission cards
Shuffle Sauron's mission cards and hero mission cards separately

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Follow turn order
In a 4-player game, turns proceed: Sauron Turn → Hero 1 Turn → Hero 2 Turn → Hero 3 Turn, then repeat

Continue until game end
Play proceeds clockwise from Sauron until a story marker reaches the final space or the Shadow Falls space

Hero Rally Step
Heroes discard any influence tokens from their current location (if not in a Shadow Stronghold) back to the influence area
4
Story Step
Advance the hero story marker 2 spaces forward on the story track
5
Plot Step
Choose one: play a plot card from hand, discard an active plot card, or do nothing
6
Event Step
Draw 3 cards from the current stage event deck and resolve one
7
Action Step
Perform 2 actions (3 actions in a 4-player game)

Hero Draw Step
Each hero draws cards from their life pool equal to their Fortitude value

Manage action tokens
Keep no more than 3 action tokens on the board

Rest Step
If no monster tokens or minions are present and the location is not a Shadow Stronghold, the hero may rest

Ambush Step
Sauron must choose whether to initiate combat with a monster or minion at the hero's location

Travel Step
Perform any combination of the following in any order:

Encounter Step
If the hero moved to a non-perilous location, draw 3 encounter cards from the matching region deck and resolve the lowest numbered card

Calculate hero distance
Count spaces from the hero story marker to the final space
15
Calculate Sauron distance
Take the smaller of: closest Sauron marker's distance to final space, or total spaces from all Sauron markers to Shadow Falls
16
Compare values
The side with the smaller number is dominant; if equal, neither is dominant

Check influence requirement
The Shadow Pool must contain influence equal to or greater than the number shown on the card

Follow timing restrictions
Play shadow cards only when their timing condition is met

Limit per turn
Sauron may play only one shadow card per player turn (up to 4 per round in a 4-player game)
20
Monster movement restriction
Monsters can only move to locations with at least 1 influence token

Minion movement freedom
Minions can move to any location, including havens

Haven combat restriction
Sauron must have hero permission to challenge heroes in havens

Influence chain rule
If a hero breaks a continuous influence chain, all influence tokens on locations no longer in extension of a Shadow Stronghold are removed except one

Stage 2 deployment
When a story marker first enters Stage 2, Sauron places Ringwraiths and Gothmog figures at their starting locations

Stage 3 deployment
When a story marker first enters Stage 3, Sauron places the Witch-King at its starting location

Winning

How to claim victory.

Hero victory by story track
Heroes win if the hero story marker reaches the final space on the story track and they complete their mission card requirements

Sauron victory by Shadow Falls
Sauron wins if all 3 Sauron story markers reach or pass the Shadow Falls space on the story track
3
Sauron victory by story track
Sauron wins if any single Sauron story marker reaches the final space on the story track
4
Final battle resolution
If a story marker reaches the end without completing mission objectives, a climactic battle between heroes and Ringwraiths determines the winner
5
Mission card fulfillment
Both sides must work toward secretly fulfilling their drawn mission card objectives throughout the game
