Kingdom Builder

2-4 players 45-45 min 6.9 Board Game Geek Rating

Players construct kingdoms by placing settlements on terrain matching drawn cards. Each turn, build three settlements adjacent to existing ones when possible. Positioning near locations grants special action tiles enabling unique moves. Victory comes from maximizing gold through castle proximity and fulfilling three randomly selected Kingdom Builder card objectives, creating varied gameplay experiences.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Assemble the game board
Select any 4 game board sections from base game and expansions, then arrange them into a contiguous rectangular map

Place location summaries
Put the summary tiles for location actions next to their matching location hexes on the board

Distribute location tiles
Place 2 corresponding location tiles on each location hex

Prepare terrain deck
Shuffle all terrain cards and create a face-down draw pile

Deal starting cards
Each player draws one terrain card and keeps it hidden from other players

Select Kingdom Builder cards
Shuffle the Kingdom Builder cards, randomly draw 3 cards, and place them face-up next to the game board

Handle red-bordered cards
These score immediately during gameplay when conditions are met after building each settlement

Scouts setup (if in play)
Reveal the top terrain card, remove all cards of that terrain type from the game, then reshuffle the deck

Capitol setup (if Harbor/Oracle in play)
Replace one castle on these boards with the capitol tile
10
Caves setup (if Tavern in play)
Place one cave tile on each quadrant on any mountain hex not within two hexes of a location hex

Island setup (if Harbor/Lighthouse in play)
Place the island board next to the main game board

Crossroads setup (if in play)
Shuffle task cards and draw one random card per Crossroads section, placing them next to Kingdom Builder cards

Nomads setup
Randomly draw and place one nomad tile pictogram-side-up on each nomad location hex
14
Marshlands terrain cards
If showing swamp and another terrain, player chooses to build 2 settlements on swamp OR 3 on the other terrain type

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Play your terrain card
Reveal your previously drawn terrain card to determine where you must build

Perform optional extra actions (before mandatory)
Activate any collected location tiles before your mandatory action

Execute mandatory action
Build exactly 3 settlements from your supply on unoccupied hexes matching your terrain card type

Follow adjacency rules
Each settlement must be built adjacent to at least one of your existing settlements when possible

Collect location tiles
When building or moving adjacent to a location hex, immediately take one available location tile

Perform optional extra actions (after mandatory)
Use any remaining unused location tiles

Build extra actions
Place one additional settlement from supply on specified terrain or location

Move extra actions
Relocate one existing settlement

Use Barracks action
Either build a warrior on suitable hex OR remove warrior back to supply

Use Wagon/Lighthouse action
Build, move up to 3 hexes, or remove your wagon/ship

Activate bonus actions (with 2 matching tiles)
Gain enhanced abilities when holding duplicate location tiles

Use nomad tiles
Activate on your next turn, then remove from game at turn end regardless of use
13
Perform farmland action (Harvest)
Once per round, build one settlement on adjacent farmland hex

Use cave action (Caves)
Once per round, move settlement adjacent to any cave to any other cave's adjacent hex

Draw a new terrain card
End your turn by discarding your terrain card and drawing a new one
16
Score red-bordered cards immediately
Check after each built settlement if conditions are met

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Trigger game end
The game ends when one player builds their last settlement from their 40-piece supply
2
Complete the round
All remaining players finish their turns until the player right of the start player completes theirs
3
Resolve Silo phase (if Harvest in play)
Before final scoring, players adjacent to silos may build or move up to 3 settlements per silo
4
Evaluate Kingdom Builder cards
Score each of the 3 cards one at a time, beginning with start player
5
Score castle hexes
Earn 3 gold for each castle hex adjacent to at least one of your settlements
6
Score palace hexes
Player with most settlements adjacent to palace earns 5 gold; ties each earn 5 gold
7
Score capitol tiles (if in play)
Earn 1 gold for each settlement within 2 hexes of the capitol
8
Score task cards (if Crossroads in play)
Earn gold for meeting each task requirement once
9
Calculate final totals
Add all gold earned and record on the score track
10
Determine the winner
The player with the most gold wins the game
11
Resolve ties
Victory is shared between all players tied for the highest gold total
