IKI

2-4 players 60-90 min 7.6 Board Game Geek Rating

In this strategic game set in historic Edo (Tokyo), players assume roles as artisans and vendors working along Nihonbashi street. Through worker placement and resource management mechanics, you'll hire various professionals, operate shops, and serve townspeople. Victory goes to whoever best embodies "IKI" - the refined Edo philosophy - by balancing sophistication, charm, and understanding of human nature to become the annual Edoite.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1
Place the central board
Put the board in the middle of the table with the side matching your player count facing up
2
Position the calendar token
Place the calendar token on the first field of the calendar, representing the first month
3
Prepare IKI score tokens
Place '30-60' IKI tokens equal to the number of players near the end of the IKI track
4
Shuffle fire tiles
Shuffle the 4 fire tiles and place them in a face-down stack on the corresponding field
5
Sort seasonal tokens
Organize fish, pipe, and tobacco tokens by season (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and place Spring tokens face-up on their fields, covering Summer, Autumn, and Winter tokens beneath
6
Prepare building cards
Draw 6 random building cards and place them face-up next to the central board; return remaining cards to the box
7
Create general supply
Place all mon, sandals, rice, wood, Koban, and special tokens in a general supply next to the board
8
Sort character cards by season
Separate the 56 character cards into 4 face-down stacks by season symbol and place them above the central board
9
Choose player color
Each player selects a color and takes the matching components: 1 player board (correct side for player count), 1 Ikizama meeple, 1 Oyakata meeple, 4 Kobun meeples, 1 score token, and 1 fire token
10
Receive starting resources
Each player receives 1 sandal token, 1 rice, and 8 mon (the Japanese currency of the Edo period)
11
Arrange player board
Place the sandal, Ikizama meeple, and 4 Kobun meeples on their designated spaces on your player board; keep other tokens within reach
12
Determine starting player
The player who most recently visited Japan becomes the starting player; otherwise choose randomly
13
Place Oyakata meeples
Players place their Oyakata meeple on a field in the starting zone of the central board
14
Stack fire tokens
Players place their fire tokens on field 0 of the fire track; the starting player's token goes on top, then clockwise
15
Position score tokens
Players place their score tokens on field 0 of the IKI track; when reaching 30 IKI, flip to the '30 IKI' side (or '60 IKI' side for 60+ points)
16
Select starting character cards
Place the 4 starting character cards next to the playing field; in reverse turn order, each player chooses one card and places it in an outer corner stall of a Nagaya, then places a Kobun on the lowest experience field of that character
17
Return unused starting cards
In games with 2 or 3 players, return unchosen starting character cards to the box

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Determine turn order
From the second month onward, the player whose fire token is furthest along the fire track places their Ikizama first; if tied, the token on top goes first
2
Select Ikizama position
Place your Ikizama meeple on an available field of the Ikizama track (fields show 1-4, 1, 2, 3, or 4 movement steps); a field is available if no other meeple occupies it
3
Note movement allowance
The number on your chosen field determines how many spaces your Oyakata may move during the Action Phase
4
Execute turns in order
Players take turns based on Ikizama track position, from left to right (leftmost field goes first but skips to Phase B2)
5
Receive mon if leftmost
If you placed on the leftmost field, receive 1 mon instead of hiring a character or receiving income, then proceed directly to movement
6
Choose one option
You must either receive income OR hire a character
7
Receive income
Take 4 mon from the supply
8
Hire a character
Select an available character card next to the central board and pay its cost (shown in mon at top-left)
9
Handle inability to hire
If you lack sufficient mon, available Kobun, or no stalls are available, you must choose to receive income instead
10
Move your Oyakata
Move your Oyakata exactly the number of fields shown on your Ikizama track position, following the arrows on the board
11
Complete a lap bonus
When your Oyakata passes the starting area (completing a full circuit), all your characters on the board gain experience; move each of your Kobun up one field on their respective cards
12
Trade with the shop
After completing movement, you may interact with the shop at your current field; each shop can only be activated once per action
13
Trade with characters in stalls
You may also trade with one of the characters in the stalls behind the shop where you stopped
14
Sandal Seller
Pay 2 mon to receive 2 sandals from the supply
15
Rice Seller
Pay 3 mon to receive 2 rice from the supply
16
Fire Brigade
Advance your fire token one field on the fire track; if other tokens occupy your destination field, place yours on top
17
Tobacco Seller
Choose one option: buy a pipe / buy tobacco / buy both a pipe and tobacco of the current season; pay the cost shown on the tokens and place them on your player board
18
Pawnshop
Choose one option: pay 1 rice and receive 4 mon / pay 1 sandal and receive 4 mon
19
Foreman
Choose one option: pay 1 mon and receive 1 rice / pay 1 mon and build one building
20
Fish Market
Select a fish token of the current season, pay the cost shown, and place it on the leftmost available field of your player board; you may not buy more than one fish per season
21
Exchange Office
Choose one option: pay 6 mon and receive 1 Koban / pay 10 mon and receive 2 Koban / receive 2 mon
22
Gather requirements
To build, you must have an available Kobun and the resources shown on the building card
23
Pay building cost
Spend the required resources (Koban, wood, etc.) to the supply
24
Place the building
Put the building card in an available stall on the central board and place your Kobun on it to show ownership
25
Building permanence
Your Kobun remains on the building for the rest of the game unless destroyed by fire; buildings cannot be activated by Oyakata movement
26
No feeding required
Kobun on buildings do not require rice during Salary Payment
27
Retrieve Ikizama
Take your Ikizama meeple back and place it on your player board
28
Add mon to character cards
Place 1 mon from the supply on each character card still next to the central board
29
Advance calendar
Move the calendar token to the next month
30
Remove old season tokens
Remove remaining fish, pipe, and tobacco tokens from the previous season and replace with the new season's tokens
31
Remove old character cards
Remove remaining character cards from the previous season (face-up and deck); return any mon on these cards to the supply
32
Reveal new characters
At the start of the following month, reveal 4 new character cards of the new season
33
Step 1: Receive Income
Collect income from all your characters on the central board based on their current experience level; retired characters provide income based on the value shown at top-right of their card
34
Step 2: Nagaya Harmony Bonus
Score IKI for each Nagaya group containing at least 2 characters of the same type (regardless of owner)
35
Step 3: Pay Food
You must pay 1 rice for each character you have on the central board; retired characters and characters on buildings do not require food
36
Determine fire origin
The player furthest along the fire track shuffles the 4 fire tiles and reveals one; this shows which stall the fire starts in
37
Fire spreads from center
The fire spreads outward from the middle of the board and stops only when extinguished or reaching a Nagaya corner
38
Check empty stalls
If the fire reaches an empty stall, it spreads to the next stall with reduced strength (strength decreases by 1 per empty stall)
39
Compare fire strength to fire level
When fire reaches a stall with a card, the owner compares their fire token level to the fire strength
40
Reshuffle fire tile
After resolving the fire, shuffle the drawn tile back with the other 3 tiles
41
Add mon and advance calendar
Place 1 mon on each remaining character card next to the board, then move the calendar token forward
42
Remove Winter character cards
Remove all remaining Winter characters from the game (face-up and deck)
43
Keep Winter tokens
Leave any remaining fish, pipe, and tobacco tokens of Winter on the board for purchase during New Year
44
Retrieve Oyakata
All players take their Oyakata meeple back
45
Determine turn order
After all players retrieve their Oyakata, the player whose fire token is furthest along goes first; resolve ties by top token position
46
Take final turns
Players take turns in descending fire track order
47
Place Oyakata and trade
Place your Oyakata on any field in the main street; you may trade with the shop and one character in the stalls as normal
48
Trigger final scoring
After the last player completes their New Year turn, proceed to end-game scoring
