HeroQuest

2-5 players 90-90 min 7.2 Board Game Geek Rating

HeroQuest is a fantasy dungeon-crawler where one player controls the evil wizard master while up to four others play heroes (barbarian, dwarf, elf, wizard). Players explore grid-based dungeons room by room, fighting monsters, casting spells, and searching for treasure. Heroes win by completing quest objectives and escaping alive; otherwise the evil wizard wins.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Prepare revival items
Ensure adventurers have access to Revive potions and Health potions for emergency revival situations
2
Note trap search limitations
Heroes can only search for traps up to 6 spaces away from their position

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Move and search restriction
Heroes cannot move and search in the same turn
2
Force-feed Revive potion
Spend your entire turn to revive a dead adjacent adventurer to full body points, consuming the potion and resetting their death-strikes to zero
3
Force-feed Health potion
Spend your entire turn to revive a dead adjacent adventurer to 1 body point, consuming the potion and resetting their death-strikes to zero
4
Search for traps
Detect traps within 6 spaces of your hero's position

Spell restrictions
The Water spell 'Sleep' cannot be used on a boss or main villain

Roll 1D6 on your turn
Determine your fate while in a dead state

Perform Knockback
Spend 2 movement points to roll a combat die against an adjacent character
8
Blocked knockback damage
If the character cannot move back 3 spaces, they stay in place and lose 1 body point
9
No defense allowed
Characters cannot defend against a Knockback attack
10
Multiple knockback attempts
Monsters may attempt additional knockbacks if they have remaining movement points

Winning

How to claim victory.

Survive the quest
Avoid accumulating 3 death-strikes which results in permanent character death
2
Character elimination
A completely dead character drops all equipment and gold, and must wait until the next quest to rejoin
