Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Determine Adventure Tier

Start the first adventure at Tier 0 unless players choose a higher difficulty level

Prepare Monster Deck

Use Starting Deck (cards up to 100) for Tier 0, or All Monsters for Tier 1+, removing monsters below XP 2 at Tier 4 and 6

Prepare Encounter Deck

Use Starting Deck (cards up to 100) for Tier 0, All Encounters for odd Tiers, or Advanced Deck only (cards from 101) for even Tiers 2+

Set Monster Cards Per Tile

Place 1 monster per black/white triangle tile at Tier 0-1, scaling up to 3 black and 4 white triangle monsters at Tier 5-6

Build Treasure Deck

Include only Blessings, Fortunes, and single-use Items (Cure Potion, Flask of Oil); remove Field Promotion from the game

Create Gear Deck

Place all remaining Treasure Items not in the Treasure Deck into a separate Gear Deck

Assign Starting Awards

Give the team only 1 Healing Surge (shared for solo/cooperative) and no random Treasure items unless specified

Handle Jarlaxle's Special Start

Draw two cards from the Gear Deck and choose one as a Personal Item kept for the entire campaign

Set Up Allies

Include specified Ally cards and figures as indicated by the specific adventure being played

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Take Hero Actions

Move and use powers according to standard rules, but heroes cannot level up during the adventure

Collect Experience

Place defeated monster XP into the Heroes' Experience Pile for later use

Cancel Encounters with XP

Spend 5 XP from the Experience Pile to cancel one encounter card

Draw Monster Cards

When placing new tiles, draw the number of monster cards indicated by the current Tier based on triangle color

Use Treasure Tokens (Optional Rule)

Convert every 5 XP into a Treasure Token worth 250 GP; reveal token back when cancelling encounters

Handle Ally Defeats

When allies defeat monsters, the team receives neither experience nor treasures

Complete Adventure Objectives

Fulfill the victory conditions specified in each adventure scenario

Increase Tier After Victory

Advance the Adventure Tier by 1 after winning, or by 2 if no Healing Surges were spent

Gain New Gear

Draw a random item from the Gear Deck and add it to the Treasure Deck after winning a cooperative adventure

Perform Town Actions Between Adventures

Execute actions in order: Swap Powers, Sell Items for half value, Trade within team, Level Up for 1000 GP, Buy Advancement Tokens, Buy Items from 2 Gear Deck draws

Purchase Advancement Tokens

Roll D20 to determine two available skill types; buy at prices scaling from 400-1200 GP based on number already owned

Track Player's Experience

Calculate total as sum of Personal Items value, Skill Tokens (at lowest category value), Level 2 progression (1000 GP), and Drizzt bonus (750 GP)

Win Team Adventures

The first team to fulfill victory conditions draws 2 items from Gear Deck and keeps one as a Personal Item

Complete Campaign

Progress through all campaign adventures, ending with Passage to Dawn (adventure 8) as the epilogue
