Lead a Scottish clan through centuries of expansion in this tile-placement strategy game. Players take turns selecting tiles from a time track, placing them to build territories and activate neighboring tiles for resources. Victory comes from accumulating whisky, landmarks, and people while avoiding penalties for oversized territories. Eight modular Chronicles expansions add varied gameplay elements.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place main boards
Position the Rondel and Clan Boards on the table on either side

Prepare supply
Place resources (wood, stone, barley, sheep, cattle), whisky casks, coins, and VPs near the board; these are unlimited

Sort tile stacks
Shuffle tiles A-D into 4 separate stacks and place face-down on marked board spaces

Insert World's End tile
Place the World's End tile in roughly the middle of the D stack

Set up David Hume
Place the David Hume tile above the Clan Board

Place Clan Shields
Put Clan Shields on matching spaces for permanent effects; players claim these when taking clan spots
7
Adjust market for 2-3 players
Place 1 coin on the leftmost space of each market row

Distribute player components
Each player receives a Home Tile (2 separate tile spaces), 10 Scotsmen, and 10 Clan Markers in chosen color

Place starting Scotsman
Put 1 Scotsman on the Starting Village tile next to Castle tile

Determine turn order
Randomly assign 1 Scotsman from each player to sequential spaces on the board

Distribute starting money
Give furthest player back (clockwise) $5, then $6, $7, $8 to subsequent players

Optional die placement
For 3-4 players, place the die in the space in front of the leading player (clockwise)

Place starting tiles
Randomly place "S" tiles face-up in front of leading player or die (clockwise), then fill remaining spaces with face-up "A" tiles, leaving the space just before the last player empty

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Determine active player
The player at the rear of the Rondel takes the next turn; this may result in the same player taking multiple turns
2
Roll die if applicable
If using the die and it is in last position, roll and move it forward that many tiles, skipping Scotsmen and Chronicle tiles, then discard the tile where it lands
3
Select and take a tile
Advance your Scotsman to any space with a tile, take the tile, and pay costs shown in upper left
4
Purchase resources if needed
Buy resources at the market if you lack those needed to pay for a tile
5
Handle blocked situations
If you cannot take any available tile, move onto a tile and discard it, then take $1 or 1 movement

Respect protected tiles
Tiles with the Protected Icon cannot be landed on, only moved over
7
Place person tiles
Set Person tiles aside in your play area and execute the 1-time effect immediately

Place territory tiles
Position tiles with at least 1 edge touching an already placed tile, directly orthogonal or diagonal to one of your Scotsmen
9
Place river tiles
River tiles must be placed in a line to the left or right of your starting tile; only 1 river per territory; no other tiles may be placed next to river tiles

Overbuild tiles
Place overbuild tiles on existing tiles with matching icons; follow Scotsman placement rule; keep one-time effects and resources from overbuilt tile

Execute one-time effects
Take effects shown in lower-left immediately when placing, before activating

Activate tiles
When placed, activate the current tile and all surrounding tiles (up to 9 total) in any order

Respect activation limits
Each tile may receive activation benefit maximum 1x per turn unless a rule says otherwise

Store resources
Place gained resources on activated tiles with a storage limit of 3 resources per tile

Use the market
Buy resources (place 1/2/3 coins left to right) or sell resources (take coins right to left) at any time; purchased resources must be used immediately for costs
16
Refill the rondel
After your turn, remove tiles behind the new last player to discard pile and fill empty spaces with current letter tiles

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Score during rounds 1-3
When the last tile of A/B/C stack is placed, score VP based on difference between your achievement vs the player with the lowest in each category

Compare Scotsmen
Count Scotsmen in Home Castle only (not other castles)

Compare Landmarks
Count number of Landmark Cards
4
Compare Whisky
Count number of Whisky Casks
5
Compare Persons
Count Person Tiles; David Hume counts as 2
6
Calculate scoring points
Difference of 1/2/3/4/5 awards 1/2/3/5/8 VP respectively
7
Keep all items
Retain tiles, cards, casks, and Scotsmen after each scoring round
8
Trigger final round
The 4th scoring round happens when the last player moves their Scotsman on or over the World's End tile
9
Optional final tile skip
Players can end on World's End tile to not take an extra tile at game end
10
Perform final scoring
Do normal scoring, then compare number of tiles in Home Territory
11
Apply tile penalty
Lose 3 VP for each tile exceeding the player with the least tiles; Person Tiles do not count; overbuilt tiles count as 1
12
Score remaining coins
Gain 1 VP per coin remaining
13
Score landmark cards
Gain VP for any Landmark Cards with end game scoring effects
14
Determine winner
Most VP wins; tiebreaker is most resources remaining
