Scottish clan leaders compete to expand territories and accumulate wealth through strategic tile placement. Players select territory tiles from a circular rondel, which activates surrounding tiles for actions like livestock farming, whisky production, and trading. Your tile selection determines turn frequency, but more turns don't guarantee victory. Success requires optimal timing decisions.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1
Place the board
Lay the board in the middle of the table
2
Prepare tile stacks
Shuffle tiles according to their backs (0s, 1s, 2s, and 3s) and place as four facedown stacks next to the board
3
Set out Special Tile cards
Place the 13 cards corresponding to Special Tiles next to the board
4
Create general supply
Place 25 clan members (black meeples), 16 whisky barrels (octagons), 44 resource cubes of different colors, 33 coins, and all VP chips next to the board
5
Distribute player components
Each player receives 1 Start-Village tile placed before them, 1 clan member placed on the Start-Village, 1 Chieftain in their chosen color, and 6 coins
6
Determine start player
Players choose a start player by any preferred method
7
Place Chieftains on Circuit
Start player places their Chieftain on any of the 14 fields; subsequent players place on the next field clockwise in turn order
8
Fill the Circuit with tiles
Fill remaining fields with tiles from the 0 stack; with fewer than 5 players, use stack 1 tiles to complete the circuit
9
Leave one field empty
The field behind the hindmost Chieftain always remains empty
10
2-3 player setup modification
Add the "Ghost" player using the special die, and pre-fill each "1" space in the Market with 1 coin

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Determine active player
The player whose Chieftain is hindmost on the Circuit takes their turn; a player may take several turns in succession if they remain hindmost
2
Step 1 - Advance Chieftain
Move your Chieftain forward to any space with a tile on it and take that tile
3
Step 2 - Pay building cost
If the tile has a cost shown in the top left, pay it before placing; if you cannot pay, discard the tile instead
4
Step 3 - Place the tile
Position the tile orthogonally adjacent to at least one existing tile and adjacent (orthogonally or diagonally) to at least one tile containing a clan member
5
Respect river and road rules
Continue river (North-South) and road (East-West) features from the Start Village; tiles without these features must not block them off; no second river or road may form
6
Handle unplaceable tiles
If you cannot legally place a tile, discard it and move any clan member one space
7
Receive immediate benefits
Gain any one-time benefit shown in the bottom right of the placed tile
8
Step 4 - Activate tiles
Activate the placed tile and all adjacent tiles (orthogonally and diagonally) in any order, each providing its ability exactly once
9
Production tile activation
Take the appropriate resource cube from supply and place it on the tile (maximum 3 cubes per tile); whisky is stored next to the Tableau
10
Distillery activation
Exchange grain for whisky when activated; also produces 1 whisky immediately when built
11
Victory Point tile activation
Exchange specified sets of resources for VP chips
12
Loch tile activation
No effect when activated; take the corresponding Special Tile Card when built
13
Loch Shiel special ability
When activated, all empty production tiles in your tableau produce 1 good each
14
Loch Lochy special ability
Produces any 2 goods when activated
15
Loch Ness special ability
Each turn, activate one additional tile (no tile may be activated twice per round)
16
Loch Oich special ability
When placed, activate all tiles in the tableau
17
Village and Castle activation
Move any clan member to a neighboring tile (orthogonal or diagonal); a single clan member may move multiple times if multiple such tiles activate
18
Send to Parliament
Use a movement to remove a clan member from your Tableau and place it beside your Tableau; you must always keep at least one clan member on your Tableau
19
Step 5 - Refill the Circuit
Remove any tiles behind the hindmost Chieftain (discarded); fill all empty fields except the one directly behind the hindmost Chieftain with new tiles from the current stack in clockwise order
20
Using the Market
Buy or sell resources at any time during your turn
21
Buying resources
Place coins (1, 2, or 3 as indicated) on the leftmost available field for that resource; may only buy if using resources immediately for placement or activation costs; cannot buy if you have sufficient resources on production tiles
22
Selling resources
Return resources to supply and take the rightmost stack of coins from that resource row
23
Market restrictions
Whisky and clan members cannot be bought or sold
24
Ghost player turns (2-3 players)
When Ghost is hindmost, roll the die and move forward that many spaces (not counting spaces with other Chieftains); remove the obtained tile from the game

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Trigger scoring rounds
Scoring occurs when the last tile from stacks 1, 2, and 3 is placed on the Circuit (three total scoring rounds)
2
Score whisky production
Compare your whisky count to the player with the fewest; score VP based on the difference (1 diff = 1 VP, 2 diff = 2 VP, 3 diff = 3 VP, 4 diff = 5 VP, 5+ diff = 8 VP)
3
Score Parliament members
Compare your clan members in Parliament plus Bonnets (from Castle cards) to the player with the fewest; score VP using the same difference table
4
Castle of Mey bonus
Parliament members count double (but not Bonnets)
5
Score Special Tile Cards
Compare your Special Tile Card count to the player with the fewest; score VP using the same difference table
6
End game scoring - Coins
Receive 1 VP for each coin in your possession
7
End game scoring - Iona Abbey
Receive 2 VP for each yellow tile in your Tableau (Abbey itself counts as yellow)
8
End game scoring - Loch Morar
Receive 2 VP for each green tile in your Tableau
9
End game scoring - Duart Castle
Receive 3 VP for each Village tile in your Tableau
10
End game penalty - Tile count
Lose 3 VP for each tile in your Tableau compared to the player with the fewest tiles
11
Determine the winner
The player with the most Victory Points wins
12
Break ties
The player with the most resource cubes remaining wins; if still tied, players share the victory
