Players represent noble houses in 15th-century Coimbra, competing for prestige through monastery relationships and expedition funding. The innovative dice drafting mechanism allows each die to serve multiple strategic purposes throughout gameplay. Victory comes from optimizing dice usage while managing dynamic synergies between influential citizens, expeditions, and monasteries across ever-changing scenarios.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Sort monastery tiles
Separate monasteries by number (I, II, III), shuffle each stack, draw 8 tiles from stack I and place randomly on blue board spaces, place 4 from II, place 2 from III, return rest to box

Place influence scoring tiles
Shuffle and place 4 tiles on board spaces, matching tile side to player count

Place die tokens by player count
For 4 players: do not use; For 3 players: place 3 die on upper, 4 on central, 3 on lower city, return 5 and 2 to box; For 2 players: place 3 and 2 on upper, 4 and 3 on central, 5 on lower city

Set up voyage cards
Shuffle and place 6 random voyage cards at bottom of board, return rest to box

Add dice to pool
For 4 players: use all 13 dice; For 3 players: remove 1 purple and 1 green; For 2 players: remove 1 gray, 1 orange, 2 purple, 2 green

Place favor tiles
Put 4 favor tiles in row next to castle with cap tile above the tile showing 2 crowns

Prepare character deck
Sort cards by number on back, shuffle each stack, form deck with III on bottom and II on top, keep stack I separate

Display character cards
Place 4 cards face-up from deck I next to upper, central, and lower cities

Position crown tokens
Place 4 crown tokens on first matching color card, top to bottom, right to left

Deal starting card options
From character deck, deal face-up groups of 2 random cards equal to number of players, return rest to box

Distribute player components
Each player takes a board, 3 die holders, and pilgrim in their color

Set player board markers
Place 2 cube markers on 7 of coin track and 7 of guard track, a disk on 0 of each influence track, and a disk on 0 of score track

Determine starting order
Randomly determine player order and place lions on matching player order flags

Draft starting cards or pilgrim position
In reverse player order, take a stack of cards OR place pilgrim on free starting corner of Coimbra
15
Complete remaining choice
In player order, each player performs the other action and gains the influence value and immediate bonus from any cards taken

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Roll the dice
First player creates the dice pool by rolling all dice

Select and place dice
Take 1 die from pool, place in dice holder, then onto 1 of 4 city locations
3
Follow castle placement rules
If placing in castle where dice exist, all dice must form ascending values left to right

Follow city placement rules
If placing in city location where dice exist, all dice must form descending values left to right
5
Continue until complete
Repeat in player order until each player has placed 3 dice
6
Resolve in order
Evaluate locations top to bottom (castle to lower city), dice left to right within each location

Castle action
Take one available favor tile, place in tableau, gain immediate bonus and crowns if shown
8
Use cap tile
If cap tile taken, place over one of your dice in upper, central, or lower city to increase its value by 3 and adjust position
9
City location action
Acquire character card from that location by paying die value in guards OR coins

Gain card benefits
Take card, advance on indicated influence track, take immediate bonus or place card for phase/end game bonus

Collect crown tokens
If crown token on acquired card, take it for later use

Trigger phase bonuses
If new card triggers a phase C bonus on another card you own, take that bonus once
13
Distress action option
If you cannot or decline the location's action, gain up to 2 coins AND up to 2 guards instead

Retrieve your die
After action, take die in holder and place on player board

Handle die tokens (fewer than 4 players)
When die token is leftmost, discard card with highest influence from that row; if tied, discard leftmost tied card

Count crowns
Sum crowns on tokens, favor tiles, and player order flag

Reorder players
Highest crown total moves lion to spot 1, second highest to spot 2, and so on

Activate influence tracks
In new player order, use dice on player board to activate matching color influence tracks

Collect income
Take the income reward shown at your position on each activated track

Use white dice
White die is wild and gains income from any track of your choice

Respect maximums
Guards and coins maximum is 20; forfeit any extras

Check phase bonuses
Apply any E phase bonuses from your cards

Clear dice
Remove dice from holders

Choose a voyage
In player order, may invest in 1 new voyage (each player limited to 1 investment per voyage card)

Pay investment cost
Pay required guards and/or coins, place disc on rose below cost

Stack discs
If another player present, place your disc on top of theirs

Follow roads
Must follow path of one-way roads when moving

Visit monasteries
When moving to monastery, place disc there on top of other players and take immediate bonus

Handle non-immediate bonuses
If monastery bonus is not immediate, save for later use

Stop early if desired
Can move fewer stops than allowed

Share locations
Can share monastery location with other players

Skip visited monasteries
If landing on monastery where you already have a disc, do not place another disc or take action, but may continue moving

Reset favor tiles
Return 4 favor tiles to row next to castle with cap tile above tile with 2 crowns

Replenish character cards
Place 4 new cards from character deck next to cities; if no cards remain, proceed to end game

Reposition crown tokens
Place 4 crown tokens on first matching color card, top to bottom, right to left

Score voyage investments
Gain VPs for successful voyages you invested in

Score influence tracks
1st place earns top score, 2nd place earns middle score, 3rd place earns bottom score (4 players only)

Score diploma sets
Each set of 5 different diploma icons scores based on set size: 1 icon = 1 VP, 2 = 2 VP, 3 = 4 VP, 4 = 8 VP, 5 = 12 VP

Score end game card bonuses
Gain VPs from character cards with end game bonus icons

Score remaining resources
Gain VPs equal to (guards + coins + crowns) divided by 2
6
Determine winner
Player with most VPs wins
7
Break ties
First player in player order wins ties
