Roll the dice
First player creates the dice pool by rolling all dice

Select and place dice
Take 1 die from pool, place in dice holder, then onto 1 of 4 city locations

Follow castle placement rules
If placing in castle where dice exist, all dice must form ascending values left to right

Follow city placement rules
If placing in city location where dice exist, all dice must form descending values left to right

Continue until complete
Repeat in player order until each player has placed 3 dice

Resolve in order
Evaluate locations top to bottom (castle to lower city), dice left to right within each location

Castle action
Take one available favor tile, place in tableau, gain immediate bonus and crowns if shown

Use cap tile
If cap tile taken, place over one of your dice in upper, central, or lower city to increase its value by 3 and adjust position

City location action
Acquire character card from that location by paying die value in guards OR coins

Gain card benefits
Take card, advance on indicated influence track, take immediate bonus or place card for phase/end game bonus

Collect crown tokens
If crown token on acquired card, take it for later use

Trigger phase bonuses
If new card triggers a phase C bonus on another card you own, take that bonus once

Distress action option
If you cannot or decline the location's action, gain up to 2 coins AND up to 2 guards instead

Retrieve your die
After action, take die in holder and place on player board

Handle die tokens (fewer than 4 players)
When die token is leftmost, discard card with highest influence from that row; if tied, discard leftmost tied card

Count crowns
Sum crowns on tokens, favor tiles, and player order flag

Reorder players
Highest crown total moves lion to spot 1, second highest to spot 2, and so on

Activate influence tracks
In new player order, use dice on player board to activate matching color influence tracks

Collect income
Take the income reward shown at your position on each activated track

Use white dice
White die is wild and gains income from any track of your choice

Respect maximums
Guards and coins maximum is 20; forfeit any extras

Apply any E phase bonuses from your cards

Stack discs

Must follow path of one-way roads when moving

Visit monasteries
When moving to monastery, place disc there on top of other players and take immediate bonus

Handle non-immediate bonuses
If monastery bonus is not immediate, save for later use

Stop early if desired
Can move fewer stops than allowed

Can share monastery location with other players

Skip visited monasteries
If landing on monastery where you already have a disc, do not place another disc or take action, but may continue moving

Return 4 favor tiles to row next to castle with cap tile above tile with 2 crowns

Place 4 new cards from character deck next to cities; if no cards remain, proceed to end game
