Viking clan leaders compete using worker placement mechanics to gather resources and recruit warriors for monster-hunting expeditions. Players deploy custom dice representing Viking fighters to battle trolls, draugr, and Norse mythological creatures. Victory comes through accumulating the most glory points from successful monster defeats and resource management.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place the game board
Put the board in the center of the table where all players can reach it

Set the round marker
Place the round marker on the space marked "1"

Prepare market tiles
Shuffle market tiles and place face-up based on player count

Position the longships
Place Small and Large Public Longships on marked board spaces, and Private Longships near the Shipwright area

Shuffle all card decks
Shuffle Rune, Destiny, Merchant Ship, Troll, Draugr, Journey, and Monster cards, placing each on designated board locations

Create the supply
Place Food, Wood, Viking Warrior dice (Swordsman/white, Spearman/red, Axeman/black), Coins, Favor tokens, and Blame tokens near the board
7
Determine starting player
Give the Starting Player marker to whoever most recently achieved glory in battle, or choose randomly

Select Viking Leaders
Starting with the player to the right of the starting player, going counter-clockwise, each player chooses a Viking Leader board

Gather player components
Each player takes worker meeples in their color, plus 1 Food, 1 Wood, 1 Coin, 1 Favor token, and 1 Swordsman die

Place score markers
Put 1 disc on the scoring track and 1 on your leader board to mark your color

Prepare workers
Place 1 worker in the general supply (obtainable via Worker Huts), keep 3 workers (4 in two-player games), return excess to box
12
Draw Destiny cards
Each player receives 1 random Destiny card to keep secret until game end

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Reveal the Troll
Place the top Troll deck card face-up on the Troll space

Reveal Draugr
Place the top 2 Draugr deck cards face-up on Draugr spaces

Place Journey cards
Put 1 face-down Journey card on each empty Journey space
4
Place Rune cards
Put 1 face-up Rune card on each empty Rune space near the Runesmith

Place Monster cards
Put 1 face-up Monster card on each empty Monster space (rightmost spaces only used with 4 players)
6
Reveal Merchant Ship
Flip the top Merchant Ship card and place it on previous cards
7
Restock crafters
Add 1 Viking Warrior die to Swordsmith, Hafter, and Blacksmith, plus 1 Food to Smokehouse (these accumulate if not taken)

Take turns placing workers
Starting with the Starting Player, going clockwise, each player places 1 worker on an available location and executes its effect
9
Continue until all workers placed
Repeat placement until all players have placed all their workers

Understand location colors
Brown locations activate immediately; Blue locations activate immediately and receive goods each round; Red locations are combat spots resolved later

Respect worker limits
Most locations hold only 1 worker per round; some allow multiple workers

Manage warrior limits
Each player may hold maximum 8 Viking Warrior dice as shown on their Leader board

Use begging if needed
If unable or unwilling to use a location, lay your worker on your board and take 1 Food plus 1 Blame token

Blacksmith/Hafter/Swordsmith
Take all accumulated Viking dice of that type

Smokehouse
Take all accumulated Food

Jarl's Longhouse
Take 1 Swordsman die and claim the Starting Player marker (if you have it, pass to player on your left)

Runesmith
Pay 1 Wood to take 1 Rune card (choose from face-up or draw randomly); Runes are one-use powerful abilities

Stave Church
Pay Coins to buy Favor tokens (1 Coin=1, 3=2, 6=3, 10=4 Favor; max 4 per activation)

Sage's House
Look at 1 face-down Journey card and draw 1 Destiny card

The Market
Exchange Food, Wood, and/or Coins 1:1 with the supply (unlimited exchanges)

Merchant Ship
Pay 1 Coin to take Food, Wood, or Viking Warriors shown on current card

Worker Huts
Pay 5, 4, 3, or 2 Coins (decreasing for later buyers) to gain an additional worker usable immediately

Shipwright
Pay the cost to build one Private Longship (each player may only build one); use it like Public Longships

Public Longships
Small: Place on chosen Distant Shores harbor (capacity 5); Large: Pay 1 Coin and place (capacity 10)

Combat locations
Place worker on Troll, Draugr, or Longship locations to reserve them for combat phase

Assign simultaneously
All players with workers on combat locations assign their Viking Warrior dice at the same time

Place warriors on enemy cards
Put dice assigned to fight Trolls on the Troll card; Draugr fighters on corresponding Draugr cards

Load longships
Place both Food and Viking Warriors on your longships; total items cannot exceed ship capacity

Respect combat restrictions
Some enemies prohibit certain warrior types (marked with crossed-out symbols); prohibited types on ships are destroyed before combat

Unassigned warriors hunt
Warriors not assigned elsewhere automatically hunt if you placed a worker on Hunting Grounds

Resolve Hunting first
Roll all unassigned dice; collect 1 Food per hit (maximum 6 Food from hunting); Favor tokens may be spent for rerolls

Fight the Troll
Assigned warriors battle until the Troll dies or all warriors perish

Apply Troll Blame
If no one kills the Troll, all players receive 1 Blame token; if someone kills it, that player may discard 1 Blame and assign 1 Blame to another player

Resolve Draugr battles
Process Draugr locations left to right; skip if no warriors assigned

Process sea voyages
Resolve Distant Shores left to right for each longship present

Roll warrior dice
Roll all assigned Viking Warrior dice to attack

Spend Favor for rerolls
Optionally discard 1 Favor token to reroll any or all dice; repeat if desired

Count damage dealt
Each weapon symbol deals 1 damage; double weapon symbols deal 2 damage; place damage markers on enemy

Suffer enemy attack
Discard warriors equal to enemy's attack value; each shield result prevents 1 loss

Check for victory
If damage equals or exceeds enemy's defense, collect the card and its rewards (Glory points, plus Wood for Trolls, Coins for Draugr, Favor for Monsters)

Continue or fail
If enemy survives and warriors remain, start new combat round; if no warriors remain, combat fails and damage markers are removed

Keep defeated enemies secret
Store defeated enemy cards face-down; their count and types remain hidden until game end

Retrieve all workers
Return workers from all locations; return Public Longships to board and Private Longships to your area

Discard undefeated Troll
Remove Troll card and give all players 1 Blame token if not killed

Discard undefeated Draugr
Remove all remaining Draugr cards

Discard revealed Journey cards
Remove all face-up Journey cards

Add coins to Monsters
Place 1 Coin on each undefeated Monster card as bonus for eventual victor

Advance round marker
Move to next round (or proceed to final scoring if round 8 completed)

Winning

How to claim victory.

Play eight rounds
The game ends after completing the 8th round

Calculate final scores
Players tally points starting with the player furthest behind on the Glory track

Sort defeated enemies
Organize your defeated Monsters and Draugr by color (blue, red, green)

Score Destiny cards
If you alone meet your Destiny card's condition, gain the higher Glory bonus; if tied with others, gain the lower bonus; you must have at least 1 qualifying item

Score enemy sets
Earn 5 Glory for each complete set of 3 enemies (one of each color); Trolls have no color and don't count toward sets
6
Score Rune cards
Gain Glory equal to the value printed on each Rune card (used or unused)
7
Score Private Longships
Gain Glory based on your ship's type
8
Score remaining Favor
Each unspent Favor token is worth 2 Glory
9
Score remaining Coins
Every 3 Coins are worth 1 Glory
10
Subtract Blame penalties
Lose Glory based on Blame tokens (1 token = -1, 2 = -3, 3 = -6, 4 = -10, 5 = -15, 6+ = -21)
11
Determine the winner
The player with the most Glory becomes Champion of Midgard and wins the game
12
Break ties
If tied, the player who defeated the most enemies (all cards including Trolls) wins; if still tied, players share victory
