2-7 players 45-45 min 7.1 Board Game Geek Rating

In Bohnanza, players plant and harvest bean cards to earn coins. You can't rearrange your hand, creating the need for strategic trading with opponents. Each turn, plant cards from your hand into fields that hold only one bean type, then trade revealed cards with other players. Harvest fields based on bean quantity using the "beanometer" scoring system. Most coins wins.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Remove certain bean cards based on player count

The oldest player shuffles all 154 bean cards thoroughly

Deal 5 cards face-down to each player (3-5 players) or 3/4/5/6 cards respectively for 6-7 players

Important:

Players must keep cards in the exact order received - no rearranging or sorting allowed

Place remaining cards face-down (gold coin side up) in the center as the draw pile

Leave space next to the draw pile for a discard pile

Each player starts with 2 bean fields in front of them (can only plant one bean type per field)

The player to the left of the dealer goes first

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

*Phase 1

Plant beans from hand**

Must

plant the first card from your hand onto one of your fields

May

plant a second card (now first in hand) the same way

If the card doesn't match any field and no empty field exists, harvest and sell beans from one field first

*Phase 2

Draw 2 cards, trade and donate beans**

Draw 2 cards from the draw pile and place them face-up

May keep, trade, or donate these cards and any cards from your hand

Only the active player can trade/donate with other players; other players cannot trade among themselves

Non-active players can only trade/donate cards from their hands

Received cards must be set aside until Phase 3

*Phase 3

Plant traded and donated beans**

All players must plant beans received during Phase 2

May harvest and sell beans if needed to create empty fields

*Phase 4

Draw 3 new cards**

Draw 3 cards one at a time from the draw pile

Place each card behind all others in your hand (maintaining order)

When draw pile is empty, shuffle the discard pile to form a new draw pile

*Harvesting and Selling (anytime)

May harvest from any field with 2+ cards (or 1 card if all fields have only 1 card)

Must sell ALL beans from the harvested field

Use the "beanometer" on cards to determine gold coins earned

Flip earned cards to gold coin side for your coin stack; discard the rest

*Buying a 3rd Bean Field

Costs 3 gold coins (2 coins for 6-7 players)

Can be purchased once per game, at any time

Pay by placing 3 coins from your stack into the discard pile face-down

Winning

How to claim victory.

The game ends when the draw pile is exhausted for the **third time** (second time for 3 players, first time for 2 players)

If this happens during Phase 2, play continues until the end of the current active player's Phase 3

If it happens during Phase 4, the game ends immediately

All players set aside cards remaining in their hands

All players harvest and sell beans from all their fields

The player with the **most gold coins** wins

Tiebreaker:

The player with the most cards remaining in hand wins
