Ascension: Deckbuilding Game

1-4 players 30-30 min 7.0 Board Game Geek Rating

Players begin with identical starter decks and use Runes to purchase stronger cards from a shared marketplace. Victory comes from accumulating Honor Points by acquiring valuable cards and defeating monsters. This dynamic deckbuilder requires constant strategy adaptation as the available card pool shifts, creating fast-paced gameplay where tactical flexibility trumps rigid planning.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Choose play mode
[Alliances] Alliances are played in 2 player pairs where both players in each pair take their turn at the same time

Select the board
Most boards are compatible except [Skulls & Sails] or [Curse of the Golden Isles] which require the Golden Isles board

Distribute starting decks
Each player receives their starting cards based on expansion:

Place always-available cards
Set Heavy Infantry deck, Mystic deck, and Cultist card in separate piles on the board

Set up expansion-specific decks
Place appropriate decks based on expansions used:

Build the Center Deck
Shuffle all Hero, Construct, Monster cards, and expansion-specific cards face down

Form the Center Row
Flip 6 cards face up from the Center Deck to form a row between all players, placing the Center Deck on one side

Handle Treasure cards
[Curse of the Golden Isles] Put all Cursed Treasure coins into the Treasure Bag and draw one random coin to place on its matching colored space

Place The Ghost Pirate
[Curse of the Golden Isles] Place The Ghost Pirate in The Deep after filling the Center Row and placing the first Cursed Treasure coin

Set up Temples
[Valley of the Ancients] Place all three Temple cards under the Center Row, out of any player's control

Prepare Honor tokens
Place 30 Honor tokens per player on the table, with red tokens worth 5 Honor and clear tokens worth 1 Honor

Set up Dreamscape
[Dreamscape] Shuffle the Dream deck, deal 5 cards to each player who chooses 3 for their personal Dreamscape, then shuffle unchosen cards back

Determine first player
Randomly determine the first player

Assign Champions
[Dawn of Champions] Each player randomly selects a Champion board and places a matching silver-bordered Hero card under it

Set ship dials
[Curse of the Golden Isles] Each player selects a ship dial and sets Crew based on turn order:

Distribute starting Insight
[Delirium, Deliverance] Each player starts with Insight based on turn order:

Shuffle and draw
Everyone shuffles their starting deck and draws five cards

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Place your ship (first turn only)
[Skulls & Sails, Curse of the Golden Isles] On your first turn, you MUST place your ship on any ship space

Play cards from hand
Place Hero cards face up in front of you, announce effects, and follow card instructions to gain resources

Play Constructs
Place Constructs face up in front of you where they remain in play permanently and provide effects every turn

Acquire Heroes and Constructs
Spend Runes equal to a card's cost in the upper-right corner to add it to your discard pile
5
Defeat Monsters
Spend Power equal to a Monster's defeat cost to gain its reward

Use Trophy Monsters
[Storm of Souls, Immortal Heroes, Rise of Vigil, Gift of the Elements, Dawn of Champions, War of Shadows] When defeating a Trophy Monster, gain Honor immediately and place it face-up in front of you to banish later for its effect

Defeat the Fanatic
[Storm of Souls, Immortal Heroes] This always-available Trophy Monster provides variable rewards based on the current Event; you may only have one Fanatic Trophy at a time

Dreambind Monsters
[Deliverance] After defeating and gaining rewards, optionally pay the Insight cost to add the Monster to your discard pile instead of the Void; play it from hand to gain its reward again

Activate Energize effects
[Rise of Vigil, Darkness Unleashed] When you reach the indicated Energy threshold, gain bonus effects on cards with Energize

Use Phantasm
[Deliverance] Pay the Insight cost to play a Hero with Phantasm directly from the Center Row, gain its effect, then banish it to the Void

Spend Insight
[Dreamscape] Acquire cards from your personal Dreamscape

Use Recur ability
[Delirium] After gaining a card's effect, optionally spend Insight equal to the Recur cost to gain the effect a second time

Participate in Fate Auctions
[Delirium] When a Fate Auction card enters the Center Row, starting with active player, bid Insight to win the listed effect; highest bidder pays their bid and gains the effect

Roll the Delirium Die
[Delirium] Spend 5 Insight to roll and gain one of six effects: banish a card (1), draw two cards (2), gain 3 Runes (3), gain 4 Power (4), gain 5 Honor (5), or gain 6 Insight (6)

Control Temples
[Valley of the Ancients] Spend a Life Keystone to control Temple of Life or Death Keystone to control Temple of Death; if you already control a temple, use the appropriate keystone to gain control of the Temple of Immortality and gain a bonus effect

Move your ship
[Skulls & Sails, Curse of the Golden Isles] Once per turn, you may move your ship to any adjacent ship space; The Deep is adjacent to the two end spaces

Spend Crew
[Skulls & Sails, Curse of the Golden Isles] When your ship is on a card's space, spend Crew equal to or greater than the card's cost to acquire or defeat it

Collect Cursed Treasure
[Curse of the Golden Isles] When acquiring or defeating a card at a space with Cursed Treasure, also take the coin and place it face-up in front of you

Activate Cursed Treasure
[Curse of the Golden Isles] During your turn, flip over two coins with matching game icons face-down to gain two of that resource (Runes, Power, or draw cards)

Raid enemy ships
[Skulls & Sails, Curse of the Golden Isles] When a card grants Raid, take a Treasure of your choice from another player whose ship shares your space

Gain Reputation
[Dawn of Champions] Earn Reputation when acquiring or defeating cards of your Champion's faction; alternatively spend 2 Runes to gain 1 Reputation once per turn

Unlock Reputation rewards
[Dawn of Champions] When reaching threshold amounts of Reputation, unlock rewards listed on your Champion board

Resolve Events
[Storm of Souls, Gift of the Elements] When an Event flips from the Center Deck, place it in the Event Zone where it affects all players; new Events send old ones to the Void

Transform Events
[Gift of the Elements] Pay the cost listed on a Transforming Event to claim it as a powerful Hero for your deck

Use Soul Gems
[Immortal Heroes] When instructed to gain a Soul Gem, draw from the Soul Gem deck and place it face up; play it for its effect anytime during your turn before it is banished at turn's end

Activate Unite bonuses
Cards with Unite provide additional effects when you play them in the same turn as other Heroes of the same faction

Check Day/Night status
[War of Shadows] Count Sun and Moon icons in the Center Row; more Sun icons means Day bonuses are active, more Moon icons means Night bonuses are active

Banish cards
When a card effect allows, remove cards from the Center Row (replaced from Center Deck) or from your hand/discard pile to the Void; banishing weak cards improves deck efficiency

Handle the Rat King
[Rat King] When the Rat King enters the Center Row, place a Giant Rat on top of each Center Row card; defeat Giant Rats to access cards beneath

Handle the Rat Queen
[Rat Queen] When the Rat Queen enters the Center Row, shuffle all other Center Row cards face-down and place a Giant Rat on each

Resolve effect order
When multiple effects occur simultaneously:

Discard played Heroes
Place all Hero cards you played and remaining cards in hand into your discard pile

Banish unused Soul Gems
[Immortal Heroes] All Soul Gems you control are banished

Lose unspent resources
All Energy, unspent Runes, and Power are lost

Draw five cards
Draw five cards from your personal deck; if empty, shuffle your discard pile to form a new deck

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Set Honor pool
Before the game, set aside Honor tokens equal to 30 per player
2
Trigger game end
When the final Honor token is earned, continue playing until the round ends after the last player to start takes their turn
3
Track overflow Honor
Players can still gain Honor after the pool is depleted; use additional tokens to track
4
Count card Honor
Add the Honor value shown in the bottom-left corner of all Heroes and Constructs in your hand, deck, discard pile, and played Constructs
5
Count token Honor
Add all Honor tokens earned during the game

Count Treasure Honor
[Rise of Vigil, Darkness Unleashed, Skulls & Sails] Add Honor from Treasure cards you control
7
Count Cursed Treasure
[Curse of the Golden Isles] Each Cursed Treasure coin is worth 2 Honor regardless of face-up or face-down state
8
Count Temple Honor
[Valley of the Ancients] If you control any Temples at game end, add their Honor values to your score
9
Determine the winner
The player with the most total Honor wins the game
10
Break ties
If multiple players have equal Honor, the player who started latest in turn order wins (first player loses all ties)
