How to Play

Vast: The Crystal Caverns

1-5 players 75-150 min 7.1 Board Game Geek Rating

Players take on completely different roles—Knight, Goblin horde, Dragon, or the Cave itself—each with unique powers and victory conditions. This asymmetric dungeon-crawler pits these opposing forces against each other in tactical combat. Only one player can win by achieving their character's specific objectives in this torch-lit underground adventure.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1
Use standard Thief setup
All components, setup, and rules are identical to the standard Thief with the exceptions listed below
2
Understand the variant concept
This variant represents an entire Guild of Thieves rather than a single cursed Thief who respawns
3
Note experience requirement
This variant is intended for players already familiar with the standard Thief, not first-time or inexperienced players

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Stash treasures differently
When you stash a treasure or gem, place it next to your player board, NOT on an upgrade space
2
Place upgrades only when killed
When you are killed, only then can you place the treasures you've stashed on upgrade spaces
3
Reassign upgrades when killed
When you are killed, you may remove tokens from any previously-selected upgrades and place them on different upgrade spaces
4
Handle Flare attacks carefully
When you use the Flare in Solo play and certain other variants, if the die roll hits your current space, you are killed
5
Respond to Soporific Spores
If the Cave targets you with Soporific Spores, the removed upgrade is placed with your other stashed but unassigned treasures
6
Pursue Dragon Gems strategically
Dragon Gems can be valuable since traps that kill you allow upgrade placement, and successful looting brings you closer to victory

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Meet the standard victory condition
Stashed treasures count toward your victory condition as normal
2
Recognize difficulty increase
This variant is slightly harder than standard Thief because you cannot benefit from upgrades immediately
3
Leverage flexibility advantage
The variant provides the advantage of adapting your play style to match current situations after accumulating stashed treasures
4
Threaten victory without upgrades
Even a base-level Thief with no upgrades can pose a serious threat and steal the win while other players are occupied elsewhere
