2-2 players 45-45 min 8.3 Board Game Geek Rating

Two players lead competing Tuatha Dé Danann factions battling for control of ancient Ireland while three enemy clans act as automated opponents. Players select deity tiles to expand influence and combat enemies using unique divine powers. Victory goes to whoever accumulates the most points by dominating regions after two eras, requiring strategic maneuvering against both human opponents and unpredictable enemy factions.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place the board
Put the board in the center of the play area

Select map card
Find the beginner map setup card (cards are double-sided showing follower and enemy unit placement) and place other map cards back in the box

Choose colors
Each player chooses black or white and takes 46 followers of their color

Place starting followers
Place two followers into each of the spaces indicated on the map card, remaining followers go into supply

Place enemy strongholds
Place the three Fomorian clan stronghold markers on spaces indicated on the map card

Prepare enemy units
Flip all enemy units to Fomorian side face-up, separate into three clans by color, place four units from each clan onto spaces indicated on map card, rest go into supply

Create enemy decks
Shuffle cards from the three Fomorian clans together, deal five face-down for first era draw pile and five face-down for second era draw pile, return remaining two cards to box

Set up deity display
Place Tuatha Dé Danann card face-up in bottom display space, shuffle four deity tiles and place face-up on other four spaces to form deity display

Distribute worship tokens
Place two tokens in personal supply for each player, place one token on each unoccupied mound space, place remaining tokens as common supply on designated space of Tuatha Dé Danann card

Set up score track
Each player places one token on 0 space of score track, rest go into personal supply. Place enemy score token on 0 space

Place indicator tokens
Place indicator tokens next to the board

Distribute player aids
Each player takes their two player aid cards

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Choose a tile or card
Select either the Tuatha Dé Danann card or first deity tile for free, or pay one worship token per tile skipped to choose a higher deity tile (second tile costs one, third costs two, fourth costs three)

Upgrade the tile (if applicable)
If you chose a deity tile in the top two display slots, place one of your player tokens on the matching space of the tile (maximum two upgrades per deity: once in fourth slot, once in third slot)

Expand from origin to target
Choose an origin space containing your followers and a target space without followers or enemy strongholds (can contain enemy units)

Tuatha Dé Danann
Target must be one space away, place one follower

Ériu (Deity of Land)
Target up to two spaces away, place followers equal to display slot value plus upgrades

Bóand (Deity of Water)
Target up to five spaces away connected by same body of water, place followers equal to display slot value plus upgrades

Morrigan (Deity of War)
Target adjacent to origin, place followers equal to display slot value plus upgrades, then defeat one or two enemy units in target or adjacent spaces

Dagda (Deity of Creation)
Expand twice to adjacent targets, split followers between two targets (cannot chain expansions)

Resolve conflicts (if applicable)
If expanding into space with enemy units, simultaneously remove one follower and one enemy unit repeatedly until one side is eliminated; claim removed enemy units into personal supply

Claim worship tokens (if applicable)
Gain worship tokens by:

Mound spaces
Claiming token from mound space if you expanded there and have followers remaining after conflict

Defeating enemies
Returning three defeated enemy units from personal supply to common supply to claim one worship token

Tuatha Dé Danann card
Taking one token from common supply if you chose Tuatha Dé Danann card

Reset the deity display
If you chose a deity tile, slide tiles above it down one slot and place chosen tile in fourth (top) slot; if you chose Tuatha Dé Danann card, move bottom deity tile to top slot and slide remaining tiles down

Reveal enemy card
Draw top card from current era's enemy deck and place face-up in discard area

Identify largest group
Find the largest connected group of spaces containing at least one unit from revealed clan (if tied, choose group with most units; if still tied, expand all tied groups)

Expand the largest group
Place one or two enemy units (per card) from supply onto each space that is:

Adjacent to largest group
Space is directly adjacent to one or more spaces in the largest group

Connected by path
Space is connected by a path to one or more spaces of the largest group
20
Unoccupied by enemies
Space is not already occupied by any enemy unit

Resolve conflicts
Remove one follower and one enemy unit from any space containing both, repeat until one side eliminated; return removed enemy units to supply (players don't claim them on enemy turns)

Winning

How to claim victory.

Game length
The game lasts 10 rounds divided into two eras of 5 rounds each

Scoring occurs twice
Score at the end of each era (after rounds 5 and 10)

Score each region
For each of 11 regions, count total units (followers or enemy units) each faction has across all spaces in that region

Begin second era
After first era scoring, start second era with black player going first (white goes first in era 1)
5
Highest score wins
After scoring the second era, the faction with most points wins
6
Enemy wins ties
If enemy faction is tied with players, enemy faction wins
7
Player tiebreaker
If two players are tied, player with most remaining worship tokens wins; if still tied, players share victory
8
Elimination victory
If one player has no followers left on board at any time, other player wins immediately regardless of scores
