How to Play

El Grande

2-5 players 60-120 min 7.8 Board Game Geek Rating

Medieval Spanish lords compete for regional dominance as the king weakens. Players draft knight cards determining turn order and forces, then use action cards to deploy knights across adjacent territories. The king's location restricts movement, but players can relocate him strategically. Scoring occurs every third round, awarding points for majority control of regions and secret castle placements. Highest score after nine rounds wins.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1
Place the game board in the center of the table (use the 4-5 player side for 4+ players, 2-3 player side for fewer)
2
Remove 10 action cards with the torch symbol and 4 cards with the tree symbol from the game
3
Sort remaining action cards by their backs (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), shuffle each deck separately, and place face down in a row; deck #5 contains only the "Your Majesty" card
4
Place both VP tiles near the board
5
Place the round marker on space "1" of the round track
6
Assemble and place the castle (Castillo) on its designated spot on the board
7
Each player chooses a color and places their VP marker on "0" of the VP track
8
Each player takes 13 power cards of their color (these form their hand) and a secret dial
9
Shuffle the 9 region cards; reveal one to determine the King's starting region and place the King there
10
Starting with the first player, each player draws 1 region card, places their Grande and 2 caballeros in that region, then return all region cards to the box
11
Each player takes 7 caballeros of their color and places them in their personal supply (Court)
12
Place remaining caballeros (21 per color) near the board as the general supply (Province)
13
The player who most recently visited Spain receives the first player marker
