Camel Up (Second Edition)

3-8 players 30-45 min 7.5 Board Game Geek Rating

Players wager on five racing camels competing around a pyramid track. Earlier bets yield bigger payouts if correct. Camels stack when landing on each other, creating unpredictable movements toward the finish line. A pyramid dice shaker randomly determines which camel moves next, making timing crucial for strategic betting and winning.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place the game board
Put the board in the middle of the table

Sort betting tickets
Organize the 20 betting tickets by color (5 colors, 4 tickets each)

Place pyramid tickets
Put the 5 pyramid tickets as a stack onto their designated space on the board

Prepare the bank
Sort Egyptian Pound coins by value and place them as a supply next to the board

Distribute starting money
Give each player 3 Egyptian Pounds to place in front of them

Assign characters
Give each player the 5 finish cards of one character and that character's spectator tile

Handle partnership cards
In games with fewer than 6 players, leave partnership cards in the box; with 6+ players, give each player their character's partnership card with "available" side face up

Determine racing camel positions
Roll all 5 racing dice together and place each camel on spaces 1-3 based on matching die results

Position crazy camels
Roll the grey die to determine starting positions for black and white camels

Load the pyramid
After placing camels, put all 5 racing dice into the pyramid by removing cap and dropping dice through

Position the pyramid
Place the pyramid with grey die inside onto its designated space on the board

Select starting player
Give the starting player marker to the youngest player

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Perform one action
Choose and execute exactly 1 of the 4 possible actions on your turn

Action 1 - Take a betting ticket
Take the top betting ticket from any color stack and place it in front of you
3
Action 2 - Place your spectator tile
Put your spectator tile onto an empty space of the race track

Action 3 - Take a pyramid ticket
Take the top pyramid ticket from the stack on the board
5
Action 4 - Bet on overall winner or loser
Secretly place one of your finish cards face down onto a betting space

Understand camel stacking
Camels on the same space form a stack; a camel farther up is always considered ahead of those below
7
Ignore crazy camels for ranking
Crazy camels are disqualified and do not count for any ranking purposes

Maintain camel orientation
Racing camels always face clockwise; crazy camels always face counterclockwise, even when moving backward
9
Action 5 - Enter betting partnership (6+ players only)
Choose another player with an available partnership card to become partners for the leg

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Trigger game end
The game ends immediately when any camel unit crosses the finish line, including if a crazy camel crosses it

Conduct final leg scoring
Perform one more leg scoring round as normal for all players' betting tickets and pyramid tickets

Score overall winner bets
Turn the face-down deck on the overall winner space so the first card placed is now on top
4
Score overall loser bets
Go through the overall loser deck the same way
5
Handle crazy camel finish
If a crazy camel carries racing camels across the finish line counterclockwise, those camels count as the least advanced
6
Count final money
All players count their Egyptian Pounds
7
Determine the winner
The player with the most Egyptian Pounds wins the game
8
Resolve ties
If players are tied for most money, they share the victory
