Players are forest spirits seeking transcendence by managing yōkai cards and deploying guardian dice across forest regions. This engine-building game features multiple strategic paths: constructing forest structures, collecting soul crystals, helping lost souls with fireflies, and managing pilgrims in personal domains. Victory comes through optimal card timing and maximizing abilities.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1
Place the game board
Put the board in the center of the table; use the side without gaps for 1-2 players, or add die-cut pieces for 3-4 players

Set round and phase markers
Place the Great Spirit counter on the first space of the Round Track and the Pagoda counter on the Spring space of the Phase Track

Arrange Torii Gate tiles
Separate tiles marked "A" and "B," shuffle each group separately, and place one random tile on each matching Torii Gate space with rewards side up
4
Place Ancient Buildings
For 1-2 players, randomly place one on each of the four inhabited areas; for 3 players, place only two in the Lands of Yomi and Glade of Jade; skip for 4 players

Distribute Forest Treasures
Shuffle Lake Treasure tiles and place one in each of the five Forest regions; for 2 players, also place a neutral Kodama on the fourth space of each Kodama Track
6
Set up tile displays
Shuffle Building, Crystal, Mitama Spirit, and Dragonfly tiles separately into face-down stacks, then turn over enough to fill all spaces next to each stack
7
Prepare Iwakura Rocks
Mix tiles, give one to each player secretly, then place one face up in each Rock Garden space; return remaining to box

Create card decks
Shuffle Vision cards face down on their space; shuffle Bitoku cards and place one face up in each Hills space; shuffle Yōkai cards (excluding Starting cards) and place one face up in each Hills space partially covering Bitoku cards

Establish common supply
Create pools for all Resource counters, x3 Resource tiles, Hikaru markers, and Amulets

Take player components
Each player takes a player board, flag, 3 dice, 5 Kodama counters, 11 Pilgrim counters, 3 Player counters, and 6 Building counters in their color

Position dice
Place dice on the red spaces of your player board showing values 3, 2, and 1 from left to right

Place Kodamas
Put one Kodama on the first space of each Kodama Track in the Forest area

Arrange Pilgrims
Place 3 Pilgrims awakened side up in the upper right area of your player board; place remaining 8 sleeping side up on Crystal spaces covering VP symbols

Set Player counters
Place one on the Bitoku Path on your player board, one on the river space of the VP track, and one randomly on the Turn Order Track

Cover Building spaces
Place all 6 Building counters on your player board covering VP symbols

Draw starting tiles and cards
Take one random Dragonfly tile for your player board, one random Vision card placed face up beside your board, and your set of 5 Starting Yōkai cards shuffled into a face-down deck

Collect starting resources
Take 1 wood, 1 jade, and 1 "+1" Amulet
18
Position Iwakura Rock
Place your received rock in the leftmost space on your player board

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Play four rounds
Each round represents one year and contains four phases: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter

Track progress
Move the Pagoda counter after each phase and the Great Spirit counter after each round
3
Summon the Yōkai
Draw cards from your deck until you have 4 cards in hand, then discard down to exactly 3 cards
4
Reap the Fruits
Collect all rewards shown on Dream Crystals (purple) on your player board in any order
5
Take turns in order
Players alternate turns based on the Turn Order Track until all have passed
6
Choose one action per turn
Select from: Play a Yōkai card, Use an unlocked die, Cross the River, or Pass
7
Place the card
Put one Yōkai card from your hand on an empty card space on your player board
8
Unlock the adjacent die
Move the die from the red locked space to the green unlocked space if needed
9
Activate the card
Optionally perform the action shown on the Yōkai card
10
Harmonize Crystal
If a Crystal is connected to that card space, optionally perform its action before or after the card action
11
Reinforce the Guardian
Before placing, optionally spend Amulets to increase the die value by +1, +2, or +3 each (maximum value 6)
12
Visit the Forest
Move the die to any empty space in one of the five Forest regions

Perform Forest Action
If your die value equals or exceeds all other dice in that region, optionally take the region's Forest Action

Perform Building Action
Optionally use one Building in that region's Inhabited Area if your die value meets the Building's requirement

Pay Property Bonus
If using another player's Building, that owner receives 1 VP, or 1 VP/+1 Amulet, or both from the supply

Navigate the paths
Move Pilgrims along one-way paths toward Illumination spaces or Torii Gates

Reach Illumination spaces
Gain VP and Amulets; Pilgrim stays there permanently with sleeping side up

Reach Torii Gates
Gain VP, Amulets, and the Gate tile's action; enables future Pilgrims to start from adjacent spaces

Cross bridges
Requires having completed at least 1 Bitoku card for the first bridge, 2 for the second

Pay construction cost
Spend wood and/or stone shown under your leftmost Building counter

Choose and place Building
Select from available tiles and place on a matching empty space in any Inhabited Area

Gain Kodama bonus
Move your Kodama in that region forward as shown on the tile, plus gain +1 Amulet if indicated

Mark ownership
Place your Building counter on the constructed tile

Spend 0, 1, or 2 Resources as indicated on the game board

Player with highest die position in Home of the Great Spirit places their counter first on Turn Order Track; continue with remaining players in position order

Return dice
Take all dice from the board back to red spaces on your player board, keeping current values

Score Spirit's Virtue
If you have at least 5 total Yōkai cards, optionally remove one from your player board permanently to score its VP (maximum 12); place under player board with type visible

Discard played Yōkai
Move remaining Yōkai cards from your player board to your discard pile; keep hand cards

Advance Great Spirit
Move the Great Spirit counter forward one space

Refresh the board
Discard Hills cards; return Hikaru markers; draw new Bitoku and Yōkai cards for Hills; remove rightmost Mitama, Dragonfly, Building, and Crystal tiles, slide remaining forward, refill from stacks

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Complete four rounds
The game ends after Winter Phase of the fourth round when the Great Spirit reaches the Ascension space

Reap the Fruits
Collect all Dream Crystal rewards one final time
3
First player reward
Player first on Turn Order Track receives 3 VP
4
Count different types
Score VP based on number of unique Bitoku card types in your path: 1=1VP, 2=2VP, 3=4VP, 4=7VP, 5=11VP, 6=16VP, 7=22VP

Compare Kodama positions
In each region, award VP to first, second, and third place Kodamas as shown on the Forest Treasure tile

Resolve ties
Add tied positions' rewards and divide evenly (round down)

Note final space limit
Only one Kodama may occupy the last space of each track

Score per Pilgrim
Each Pilgrim adjacent to a Rock awards 1 VP per matching item you own (Yōkai cards by type, Buildings by type, Mitama Spirits by type)

Use Shinigami as wild
Choose which Mitama type each Shinigami counts as

Use Yama-uba as wild
Choose which Yōkai type each Yama-uba counts as

Count items on multiple Rocks
Same item may count for different Rocks

Calculate total
Add current values of all three dice plus number of Resources held

Divide and score
Divide total by 4 (round down) to get VP

Complete Visions
Earn VP shown on each Vision card where all requirements are met

Lose VP for incomplete
Subtract 1-2 VP for each unfulfilled Vision as indicated

Use items once
Each game element can only fulfill requirements of one Vision

Add purple VP
Total all end-of-game VP (purple icons) revealed on your player board from Buildings and Crystals

Highest VP wins
The player with the most Virtue Points becomes the new Great Spirit of the Forest

Most completed Vision cards
