Medieval monastery abbots compete to build the greatest sacred library by collecting workers and resources using limited gold donations. Players win by dominating categories like scribes, manuscripts, and supplies through strategic card acquisition in donation and auction phases. Victory points are awarded based on category leadership, with values shifting throughout the game.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Place the Scriptorium

Put the Scriptorium board in the center of the table

Set the dice

Place one die on each category showing the value "3"

Remove cards for player count

Discard cards based on number of players:

Create the draw pile

Shuffle all remaining cards and place them face down

Choose first player

Pick a starting player by any method

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Draw cards one at a time

Active player draws cards based on player count (2p = 3 cards; 3p = 4 cards; 4p = 5 cards)

Allocate each card

As you draw each card, place it in one of three locations:

Opponents select cards

In clockwise order, each other player takes 1 card from the public space into their hand

Handle Church Cards

When acquired, immediately play and discard the Church Card, then adjust the corresponding dice

Continue the phase

Play passes clockwise until the draw pile is exhausted

Prepare auction deck

Shuffle the auction pile to create a new draw pile

Reveal card for auction

The original first player reveals the top card and bidding begins

Bid in turn order

Starting with the player left of the active player, each player bids or passes

Pass permanently

If you pass, you cannot bid on that card again

Pay for non-gold cards

Bid using gold cards; you cannot make change and may overpay; reveal and discard gold used

Pay for gold cards

Bid using number of cards of any type; discard that many cards without revealing them

Handle no bids

If no one bids, discard the card and the active player's turn ends

Rotate active player

After each auction, the player to the left becomes the new active player

Bluffing penalty

If a winning bidder cannot pay their bid:

How to claim victory.

End the game

The game ends when all cards in the auction pile have been purchased or discarded

Score each category

The player with the highest total value in each category scores victory points equal to that category's die value

Break category ties

If tied in a category, the player with the card closest to letter "A" in the lower right corner wins that category

Determine the winner

The player with the most victory points wins

Break total point ties

If tied on victory points, the player with the most gold wins; if still tied, the winner of the Monk category wins
