A Fake Artist Goes to New York

5-10 players 20-20 min 7.1 Board Game Geek Rating

In this 5-10 player party game, one person secretly receives a blank card while others get the same drawing prompt. Everyone takes turns adding single strokes to a collaborative drawing. Players then vote to identify the "fake artist" who doesn't know the word. The fake artist wins by avoiding detection or correctly guessing the mystery word.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

1

Assign roles

Designate 1 Games Master (GM), 1 Fake Artist, and 3-8 Artists

Distribute markers

GM takes the black marker; all other players take coloured markers

Prepare title cards

GM takes one Title Card per player

4

Announce category

GM chooses and announces a category to all players

5

Select secret word

GM chooses a word from that category that the artists will draw

6

Mark the cards

GM writes an X on one Title Card and writes the secret word on all remaining cards

7

Deal cards randomly

GM shuffles and deals out the Title Cards to players

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1

Determine first player

GM selects who will draw first

Add one line

Draw a single continuous line on the shared artwork

3

Pass to next player

Play continues clockwise to the next player

4

Complete two rounds

Each player draws exactly two lines total (one per round)

5

Balance your drawing

Real Artists must draw well enough to prove they know the word, but not so obviously that the Fake Artist can guess it

Winning

How to claim victory.

1

Examine the artwork

After the 2nd round, all players study the drawing to identify suspicious contributions

Vote simultaneously

GM counts down, then everyone points at who they suspect is the Fake Artist

3

Fake Artist wins by avoiding detection

If the Fake Artist does not receive the most votes (or is not tied for most), the Fake Artist and GM win

4

Fake Artist attempts to guess

If the Fake Artist receives the most votes (or ties for most), they must guess the secret word
