Star Wars: Outer Rim

In this 1-4 player Star Wars game, players command outlaw characters navigating the galaxy's dangerous outer rim. You'll recruit iconic crew members, complete illegal jobs, hunt bounties, and upgrade your starship while avoiding faction patrols and rival scoundrels. Victory comes from accumulating ten fame points through various criminal activities and personal achievements.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Build the map
Arrange the 6 map tiles and 2 endcaps to form the game board as shown in the rulebook

Set up patrol tokens
Sort patrol tokens by level (white dots on back), place Level 1 tokens face-up on navpoint spaces adjacent to their faction's endcap

Set up contacts
Shuffle all contact tokens face-down, then place one face-down on each contact space matching the space's color and pip count

Create token supply
Separate credit, damage, and goal tokens into piles accessible to all players

Determine first player
All players roll 6 dice; player with most hits and crits goes first

Select characters
Starting with first player and going clockwise, each player chooses a character and receives:

Complete character setup
Follow setup instructions on character card bottom

Set up decks
Separate market cards into 6 decks by card back, shuffle each, place face-down below map, flip top card face-up on each deck

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Move your character
Move up to your ship's hyperdrive value in spaces across the map

Recover all damage
Remove all damage tokens from your character and ship instead of moving

Gain 2,000 credits
Take 2,000 credits from the supply instead of moving

Use planning ability
Resolve any card ability with bold "Planning" text

Trade action
Exchange bounties, cargo, crew, gear, jobs, or mods with another player in your space

Market action
Available only on planets; optionally discard top card of one market deck, then optionally purchase top card from any market deck

Deliver action
Deliver cargo or bounty cards at their destination planet to receive rewards

Use action abilities
Resolve any card ability with bold "Action" text (each ability once per turn)

Encounter a patrol
Fight ship combat against a patrol token in your space

Encounter your space
Draw top encounter card matching your location (planet or navpoint deck)

Encounter a contact
Flip a face-down contact token on your planet, draw its databank card, resolve top section

Use encounter abilities
Resolve any card ability with bold "Encounter" text

Determine combat type
Ground combat uses character's combat value and health; ship combat uses ship's combat value and hull

Attacker rolls dice
Roll dice equal to your combat value; hits deal 1 damage, crits deal 2 damage

Defender rolls dice
Defender rolls dice equal to their combat value and calculates damage

Determine winner
Player dealing more damage wins; attacker wins ties

Receive damage
Both sides take damage equal to opponent's roll (place damage tokens on character card or ship sheet)

Roll two dice
When testing a skill, roll 2 dice to determine pass or fail

Check results
Unskilled requires at least one crit; Skilled requires hit or crit; Highly Skilled requires hit, crit, or focus

Find the target
Locate contact token matching your bounty card's class (color and pips)

Fight the contact
Choose to fight instead of drawing databank card when encountering matching contact

Eliminate or capture
If you win, either eliminate (remove token, gain elimination reward) or capture (place token on bounty card, deliver to destination for capture reward)

Travel to destination
Must be at the job's listed destination during encounter step

Resolve databank card
Follow the job's databank card instructions step by step

Complete or fail
Defeat during a job means failure; completing the job grants listed rewards

Become defeated
When character takes damage equal to health or ship takes damage equal to hull, lay your standee down

Pay penalty
Lose 3,000 credits and discard all secrets
28
Recover next turn
Must choose to recover all damage during next planning step; stand your standee back up

Winning

How to claim victory.

Reach 10 fame
First player to gain 10 fame wins the game immediately
2
First game adjustment
Use 8 fame as the winning threshold for learning games

Extended game option
Experienced players may use 12 fame for longer games

Ways to gain fame
Complete personal goals, ship goals, bounties, jobs, deliver illegal cargo, defeat Level 2-3 patrols, or use luxury deck cards
5
Track fame
Move fame marker on player board whenever fame is gained
6
Most famous player
Players tied for highest fame are all considered "most famous" (affects certain abilities)
