Patchwork

2-2 players 15-30 min 7.6 Board Game Geek Rating

In Patchwork, two players compete to create the highest-scoring quilt on their 9x9 boards. Players take turns either purchasing fabric patches using buttons (currency) or passing to collect more buttons. Each patch costs buttons and time, advancing your marker on the time track. Patches generate button income and fill board spaces. Victory goes to whoever has the most points from buttons minus penalties for empty squares.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Arrange patchwork pieces

Place all patchwork pieces randomly in a complete circle around the time board

Position the neutral token

Place the neutral token within the circle immediately after the 1x2 patch when moving clockwise

Identify available pieces

The next 3 pieces clockwise after the neutral token are the ones currently available for purchase

Place time tokens

Both players' time tokens start on the first space of the time board

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Determine active player

Players alternate turns in order (disregard the original rule about multiple turns when behind)

Choose your action

Each turn, either advance on the time track OR buy a patchwork piece if you have enough buttons

Advance option

Move to the first space in front of the other player

Buy option

Purchase one of the three available patchwork pieces

Skip turn condition

If you cannot afford any of the next 3 available pieces and are already in front of the other player, skip that turn

Button space bonus

If any movement lands you on a button-overlapped space on the time board, receive 1 button plus income for what's on your board (and spaces advanced, if applicable)

Single square bonus

If any movement lands you on a single-square-overlapped space, receive that piece for your quilt board if the other player hasn't already claimed it
