Jekyll vs. Hyde

2-2 players 30-30 min 7.2 Board Game Geek Rating

This two-player trick-taking game pits Dr. Jekyll against Mr. Hyde across three rounds. Players compete to win tricks, but after each round, an Identity Marker always moves toward Hyde's side based on the trick difference. Hyde wins immediately if the marker reaches the track's end; Jekyll wins by surviving all three rounds and preventing complete transformation.

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

1
Play three rounds
The game consists of exactly 3 rounds with three phases each: Preparation, Tricks, and Evil Progress
2
Receive cards
Each player receives 10 cards (5 remaining cards are set aside)
3
Exchange cards
Each player selects cards from their hand to exchange with opponent face-down simultaneously
4
Mandatory Potion exchange
If you receive 2 or more Potion cards in your initial 10 cards, you must include at least 1 Potion card in the exchange
5
Determine first player
The figurine's position on the Identity Track determines who starts (Jekyll's side = Jekyll starts, Hyde's side = Hyde starts)
6
Play 10 tricks per round
Each round consists of 10 tricks
7
Lead a card
The starting player plays any card from their hand face-up
8
Follow suit requirement
If the first player plays a colored card, opponent must play the same color, or may play a Potion card; if they have no matching color, they may play any card
9
Potion as lead
If the first player plays a Potion card, they must declare a color; opponent must play that color (even if they have a Potion), or any card if they lack that color
10
Same color comparison
If both cards are the same color, the highest number wins
11
Different color comparison
If cards are different colors, the higher-ranked color wins regardless of number
12
Potion card resolution
Execute the Potion effect first, then the highest number wins the trick
13
Collect and lead
The winner takes both cards and becomes the new first player
14
Establish ranks during play
Color ranks are not set at game start; they are determined as cards are played
15
First color played
The first Evil card color played becomes the lowest rank (place token on left space)
16
Second color played
The second color to appear takes the middle rank
17
Third color rank
The remaining color automatically becomes the highest rank
18
Potion cards have no rank
Potion cards are colorless and do not have a rank
19
Pride card trigger
The trick winner takes one trick (two cards) from their opponent
20
Greed card trigger
Both players select 2 cards from their hand (or 1 if it's their last) and exchange them simultaneously
21
Wrath card trigger
Remove all color tokens from the board; reset ranks so the next color played becomes the lowest
22
Double Potion cancellation
If both players play Potion cards, effects neutralize and the highest number wins
23
Potion number values
Potion cards have "+" symbols (e.g., "2+" beats 2 but loses to 3)
24
Calculate difference
Compare tricks won by each player and subtract the smaller from the larger
25
Move the figurine
Move the figurine toward Mr. Hyde's side by the calculated number of spaces
26
Reset for new round
Remove color tokens from the board and reshuffle all 25 cards including the 5 set aside

Winning

How to claim victory.

1
Mr. Hyde wins immediately
If the figurine reaches the last space on the Identity Track (far left) at any point, Mr. Hyde wins
2
Dr. Jekyll wins by survival
If the figurine has not reached the last space after three complete rounds, Dr. Jekyll wins
3
Jekyll's strategic goal
Dr. Jekyll must maintain balance by keeping trick counts close, as the figurine always moves toward Hyde regardless of who wins more tricks
4
Play two games
For a more balanced experience, play two games and swap roles between games
5
Score as Mr. Hyde
At the end of each game, Mr. Hyde scores points equal to spaces traveled on the Identity Track (maximum 10 points)
6
Determine winner
The player with the higher Mr. Hyde score wins after both games
7
Tiebreaker for 10 points
If both players score 10 points as Hyde, the one who achieved it in fewer rounds wins
8
Final tie resolution
If still tied, the match ends in a draw
