Players compete to become Grand Librarian in a gnomish village by building the best personal library. Send assistants to collect rare books from various locations, racing against opponents for the finest tomes. Win by strategically arranging your collection to meet the Inspector's criteria: alphabetical order, shelf stability, variety, and avoiding banned books.

Get Ready

Setup the game with these step-by-step instructions before diving into your turn.

Lay out components
Place the board in the center and put the dry erase score board nearby (side B-7c, top right corner)

Place Diviner's Hut
Find the Location tile "Diviner's Hut" and place it below the board

Shuffle location tiles
Shuffle the remaining 17 Location tiles face-down into a pile

Determine first player
Choose a start player randomly and give them the white bead (1st player marker)

Select Library Tiles
Each player takes 1 Library Tile by picking one, receiving one randomly, or laying out 2 per player and choosing in reverse order

Take assistants
Based on your Library Tile, take the matching Special Assistant and 2 standard assistants

Set up category cards
Shuffle the 6 category cards (yellow, red, blue, black, purple, green)
8
Prepare Book deck
Shuffle the 152 Book cards face-down and deal 6 to each player for their starting hand

On Your Turn

What you can do during your turn.

Preparation Phase - Reveal locations
Draw location tiles equal to the number of players (round 1: one fewer since Diviner's Hut is out)

Preparation Phase - Check instructions
Look for "Preparation Instructions" in the upper right corner of tiles and execute them

Preparation Phase - Place cards
Some locations require cards from the deck to be placed on them face-up or face-down

Place assistants
Starting with the 1st player and going clockwise, each player places 1 assistant at a time onto an empty location space or their own Home board

Pass when empty
If you have no assistants left, pass until everyone finishes placing

Player count restrictions
Spaces marked "3+" are only used with 3+ players; "4+" only with 4+ players

Instant actions (Green banner)
Perform the action immediately after placing your assistant

Delayed actions (Red banner)
Leave your assistant on the location to resolve in Phase 3

Home board actions
When placing on your Home board, choose to either draw 1 card OR shelve 1 card

Resolve in tile order
When all players have placed, resolve each location tile in ascending order (1-18)

Keep permanent location
Move the newly drawn tile with the lowest number to the "Permanent Locations" section of the main board

Discard other tiles
Remove the remaining tiles used this round that are not on the main board

Grid placement
Build your library by playing cards adjacent to other cards in a grid pattern

Row limit
Your library can only be 3 cards high (maximum 3 rows), but rows can be any width

Adjacency requirement
All cards (except the first) must be placed orthogonally adjacent to an existing card

Alphabetical order
Cards must read in alphabetical order from left to right, top to bottom for scoring
17
Alphabet Order
The letter indicates what letter all books start with; X/Y shows this card's position among all cards of that letter

Book Category Symbols
Colors indicate book categories for scoring purposes

Flavor Art
Decorative book titles with no mechanical function

Winning

How to claim victory.

Library threshold
The game ends when at least 1 player has 16/14/12 book cards in their library at round's end with 2/3/4 players respectively

Final round
When triggered, play one more complete round before scoring

Voluntary flip
Before scoring, players may voluntarily turn any cards in their library face-down

A1 - Check alphabetical order
Flip face-down any card not in proper alphabetical order (left to right, top to bottom) until the next card follows A-Z sequence

A2 - Tally categories
Count the number of books each player has for all 6 categories

B1 - Shelf Stability
Score 1 point for each card in your largest rectangular "box" (minimum 2x2) formed by adjacent cards including the bottom row; flipped cards count

B2 - Prominent Works
Players with 1st/2nd/3rd most Prominent books score 15/9/4 points

B3 - Banned Books
Lose 1 point for each Banned book in your library

B4 - Variety bonus
Multiply your lowest count among the 5 non-banned categories by 3 for points

B5 - Secret category
Reveal your secret category card and multiply that book count by 2 for points

Highest score wins
The player with the most points is the winner
12
Tiebreaker sequence
Ties broken by most total books, then fewest remaining cards in hand, then fewest Banned books
